April 2023

 Friday 28th April, 2023

I'm sure the children are very much looking forward to two long weekends over the next fortnight. Let's hope for some nice weather to go with them.

Next week is the last week of preparation for the Year 6 children before they take their Key Stage 2 tests, and I'm sure they are ready to do their best before they turn their attention to enjoying the exciting summer events in the Year 6 curriculum.

We've listed some of the main dates for the rest of the summer term at the bottom of the newsletter. We hope this may help with some forward planning.

Please read the information below about a Coronation celebration next Friday. We hope to have a nice end to the school day (fingers crossed for good weather!). It will hopefully be the start of a lovely weekend. The children can come to school in red, white and blue on Friday.

Our main value for this half term is 'resilience' and we will be sharing examples in assembly over the next few weeks. This is a key value for all children, and I've seen many examples across the school this week.

Wishing you all a lovely bank holiday weekend.

Kind regards

Matt Walton

Book Fair

The book fair started yesterday and will be with us until 4th May. We have gained an extension due to the teacher strikes. It will be open Wednesday and Thursday next week in the school library (3:15pm-4pm).

Summer term

Now we are in the summer term, it is advisable to provide a water bottle for your child, so they can have regular water to keep them hydrated. Please note that drink in the classroom should only be water. On sunny days, we recommend children having a sun hat or cap and for sun cream to be applied before school starts.

Girls' Football Team

On Friday 21st our 9 girls from years 5 and 6 joined nine other schools to take part in the annual Norwich High School for Girls summer football tournament.

The weather forecast didn't look all that favourable, but the enthusiasm of the girls soon cheered everyone up.

The morning began for us with games against Norwich High School for Girls, Norwich School, Poringland and Old Catton. Two draws and two losses meant that we would spend the afternoon on the 'Silver' pitch battling it out for the Silver Cup.

After a quick break for lunch, we kicked off the afternoon with a game against Cringleford. After that came games against Old Catton, Poringland and Bignold. with Old Catton matching us for wins it would be a close thing. Before our final game, we needed a win by one goal to secure the overall victory. Winning 4-0 it meant that we won the Silver Cup.

The team was: Bella, Freya C, Phoebe, Ani, Jessica, Lexi, Zuza, Freya H and Olivia. As you would expect, the girls were brilliantly behaved and showed amazing team spirit all day and thoroughly deserved to come away with some silverware.

Here is a report by Phoebe about the day:

At the girls' football tournament at the Norwich High School for Girls on Friday the 21st of April. Me and lots of girls played against teams all over Norwich which was a great experience for the people that have not been in a team before. There was a lot of team spirit in every match and Freya in 5B scored most of the goals, I scored one and Olivia in 6R scored one too. Everybody was always kind and played amazingly. From Phoebe

Freya and Bella in Year 5 also wrote a report of the day:

The day of the football tournament, we didn't know how well each other played since we hadn’t trained with each other before. We were all very supportive  of each other and cheered all of us on with encouragement! The first four games we weren't very hopeful but we still didn't give up.

Then the afternoon came and we went down to the little pitch and had more energy from lunch and started to play better as a team. Then we played another four games, the first game we played in the afternoon and we won it. There was Old Caton who were the ones who we tied for points with and we drew 0-0 to them both times we played them. After that, we won the rest of the games and kept an eye on Old Caton’s score!

Our very last game, it was very important we had to win this we won 4-0 and we thought we won the silver cup …

Soon after we made our way to the presentations and saw that we were tied with Old Caton…

Luckily, we won by goals which was a huge achievement for us as a team!!!

So we won the SILVER CUP !!!!!!

Coronation Celebrations

Year groups will be doing their own activities to recognise the coronation as we go through next week. On Friday, we have decided that the children can also come to school dressed in red, white and blue.

To mark the historical weekend as a whole school, we are going to have an outside party during the afternoon next Friday. We are asking parents & carers if they could provide a couple of snacks or cakes for their child to eat, and we will all be sitting outside and will enjoy a street party atmosphere to finish the week off. More information will be sent by email early next week.

Eco-team

Our eco-team are working towards renewing our eco-status this term. The previous eco-team were able to meet any aspects of the action plan and this term the eco-team are looking to do the following:

- encourage lights and electrical equipment to be turned off when not in use

- to provide compost bins in the playground

- to encourage healthy eating at break times on Tuesday's and Thursday's to improve healthy eating in school and to reduce waste and packaging brought into school

- to support the mental health and well-being of all pupils

They will be talking to all the children in next Wednesday's assembly.

Year 4 Opera Rehearsals

Year 4 are going to be performing an opera at the Octagon Barn in Little Plumstead alongside a number of other schools. Their ideas have helped to put the opera together, and they are now working towards the performance.  We have enjoyed welcoming Into Opera into school this week to work with them, and it will be an exciting few months ahead as we count down to the opera in July.

Year 4 Bike-ability

The year 4 children enjoyed their first experience of 'Bikeability' and tested their handling skills during a morning or afternoon of biking last week. The feedback from the children has been really positive, and the course helps them with the basic skills moving towards completing the 'on the road' course in Year 5 or 6. The children received their certificate and 'Bikeability' badge today in assembly.
