HEADTEACHER'S MESSAGE

It's been lovely hearing carols sung in school and hearing the songs from the drama club rehearsals. We all missed out last year so having some normality this Christmas is fantastic. Hopefully the children will enjoy singing the carols next week, and I'm sure you'll enjoy listening to them.

The curriculum focus this month is on history, a subject that has a central part to play in our curriculum. Many other subjects are taught alongside the study of a historical period, such as science (rocks & soils links with the Stone Age in Year 3) and design and technology (e.g. making of Viking long-boats in Yr 5).

The school have enjoyed seeing the drama club performance this afternoon and this kick-starts a nice end to the Christmas term. We hope the children enjoy the Christmas period in school after missing out on a number of events last year.

My hope, as we enter new restrictions this Christmas period, is that we can keep all children in school during this academic year. It is too early to tell what may happen with Omicron, but it is vitally important for academic progress and mental health, that we are able to continue in school and to build upon the successes of the autumn term.

Enjoy the weekend.

Matt Walton, Headteacher

It has been brought to our attention that some parents are parking in the school car park at the end of the school day. Please can we remind everyone that the car parks are only for staff or visitors and disabled parents/carers.

Curriculum focus: History

Children at Sprowston Junior School are taught history through a rich and varied curriculum which includes hand-on experiences through trips and visits. We investigate the past through sources such as pictures, photographs, artefacts, stories and writing to encourage deep questioning and inference skills. Children develop a sense of chronology as they progress through the school, building on prior learning and enabling children to make comparisons between different periods of time. As you walk through the school, you will see a visual timeline in every classroom, key questions and vocabulary clearly displayed. The corridors are also transformed into visual displays to showcase learning. Children’s history books show links made to the Literacy curriculum with extended writing opportunities and examples of cross-curricular learning through art, science, design and technology and PSHE.

At Sprowston Junior School, we have organised history teaching and learning within a chronological format. Children will work on securing an understanding of British, local and world history. Each class refers to a visual timetable displayed in the classroom to help children grasp the concept of time and place.

In year 3, children look at pre-history with the ‘Savage Stone Age’. They will develop an awareness of people as hunter-gatherers and early farmers. Through a range of sources, children will also develop an understanding of Stone Age inventions such a fire making, stone tools, weapons and the wheel. Year 3 continue to develop an understanding of ancient civilizations but focus on the wider world through the topic of the ‘Ancient Egyptians’.

Year 4 build on the previous year by learning about the ‘Groovy Greeks’ and the expansion of the Roman Empire. During the year they get the chance to immerse themselves in Greek life with a visit from history off the page.

Year 5 continue the chronology with the Anglo-Saxons and Vikings. As part of this, they visit the burial site at Sutton Hoo to find out more about life as an Anglo-Saxon, the Gods and changes that took place around that time. They continue to build period on this period of history by exploring the Vikings and their impact on the UK.

Year 6 continue to build a picture of local history through a study of Medieval and Tudor Norwich. Towards the end of the year, they look at World War 1 and 2, building an understanding of how they began and drawing comparisons between the two. Children will look at connections and patterns over time, whilst developing their use of historical vocabulary. Through high-quality history lessons that include cooperative learning opportunities, our aim is to encourage skills of enquiry, analysis, evaluation and debate. Children will also use the past to develop a better sense of self within a social, political and cultural background.

We hope the children build an enjoyment of, and interest in history, which continues to develop in the next stage of their education and beyond.

Sophie's Sparkle Fund

We were delighted to accept a recent donation to the school of £250 from Sophie's Sparkle Fund. We have been working closely with Evie and the family to decide what to spend it on. Evie has chosen some lovely books for the library and the School Council met with Mr Taylor yesterday to decide how to spend the rest of the money. We hope this will include a new trophy in Sophie's honour awarded yearly for showing bravery and strength.

'As Sophie's parents and setting up the fund in her memory we wanted to give back to the school for the support we as a family received and to support the children of the community; as we have been supported by the community as well.

Sophie would have loved to have gone to the school and Evie has been really well looked after. It is a pleasure for us to know that Sophie's Sparkle fund has been able to give a little something back, and we hope the school and students enjoy it.

Sophie's Sparkle fund is now focusing on supporting families of childhood cancer with a Sophie Sparkle package being put together for 2022 and the fund will also seek to support bone cancer research.'

Attendance

Attendance for the term currently stands at 93.79%.  Whilst this is lower than we would normally expect, we've not been living through a 'normal' term for illnesses. It is vitally important for the children's learning to attend school as consistently as possible. This we appreciate this has been a challenge in itself over the past few months. We will celebrate those with 100% attendance in assembly next week whilst also recognising others who have attended well all term.

Year 4 - Ancient Greek Day

Year 4 enjoyed their Ancient Greek day earlier in the week. They took part in a lot of different activities in the morning and performed plays and had a feast in the afternoon. Here's some feedback from the children:

We met a man that gave us all jobs and those jobs were a doctor, clay making, wax carving and art. When you were a doctor, you had to make medicine to cure others. With the clay, you had to make a pot. I enjoyed acting in the play and we had a feast.

Charlie 4P

We had an amazing Greek day. We had olives and grapes. We made pots, mosaics and medicine. 4P and 4I loved it!

Daniel 4P

I pretended to be a doctor then I carved a temple into a soap stone. Next, we did some plays and put on some shows. We ended with a big feast!

Francesca 4P

We started with the adults running stalls. I was a slave with a yellow band for Mrs Pearce. In the afternoon, we had a feast and put on shows.

Christmas Jumpers!

We've seen some brilliant Christmas Jumpers today! The children have also taken part in a fun 'Santa Dash' on the playground.

Drama Club Christmas Performance

The children enjoyed watching the drama club performance this afternoon. This was the last dress rehearsal before they perform to parents and carers next week.
