Welcome back!

We hope you enjoyed the summer break. We are extremely excited about working with all of your children and we have lots of amazing things planned for them.

Year 6 is a really important year. In their final year of Sprowston Junior School they have the chance to be great role models and to set the standard for behaviour and attitude for the rest of the school. It also gives them the opportunity to develop the skills needed for high school.

In this newsletter we will be telling all about the term ahead; our curriculum, expectations and any day-to-day information we feel you need to know.

Our Team...

Home/School Journal:  This year we shall be encouraging the children to use their journals to record homework and time spent reading. All children are asked to have their journals in class with them every day and the teachers we will check the journals fortnightly on a Friday. However, if you wish to contact us at another time, please feel free and just ask your child to show us the journal when they come into school.

Marvellous Me: Marvellous Me will be used as a way of communicating information about children's successes as well as important events and message with home. Please ensure that you have signed up for the app and if you have any problems with this please do not hesitate to contact us.

Here are links to a 'parent walkthrough guide' nd also a 'how to use Marvellous Me' video to help get you started.

Due to a technical issue, if you already have a Marvellous Me account you may need to create a new one this year. Apologies for any inconvenience.

Homework: Every week, your child will be expected to complete one piece of Maths and one piece of Literacy homework which will be linked to the learning in classroom that week and will help to consolidate their understanding. We also expect a minimum of 2 hours of home time reading per week to be recorded in their home school journals.

Homework will be given on a Thursday and will be expected back the following Tuesday.

We will also ensure that homework is written on Marvellous Me as well.

Our Autumn Curriculum

Literacy - we begin with Marcus Sedgwick's 'Floodland' which is set in Norwich and the surrounding area. We will then move on to Darren Shan's 'Cirque du Freak'.

Maths - we will begin by revisiting place value and the four main operations (addition, subtraction, division and multiplication) before moving on to fractions.

Science - we will be looking at how living things have adapted over time and thinking about inheritance. As well as this will be investigating how light travels in a straight line, how it helps to form shadows and is reflected.

Geography - we will learn all about how rivers are formed and how they impact the lives of people around them. During this topic will be focusing on Brazil and the River Amazon, we will also spend some time learning about the rainforest.

History - we will be learning about Medieval Norwich and how it began the city we know and love today. We will also find out how Norwich City Football Club got its emblem of a canary.

R.W.E - in Religious and Worldviews Eductation we cover three topics in year 6; alternating between Judaism, Humanism and Christianity for the entirety of the year.

Art - we will focus on the drawings and sculptures of Giacometti.

DT - we will be exploring renewable energy and climate change through the book 'The Boy who Harnessed the Wind' resulting in children designing and modelling a method of producing electricity using scrap materials.

Computing - we will begin by looking at E-Safety as this is a crucial aspect of the computing curriculum in today's technological society. We discuss how to stay safe online and look at how the Internet is used. Later on in the term we will begin to look at programming and coding.

Music - this term, we are going to be looking beat and rhythm before moving on to Brazilian music before Christmas.

French - Mrs Blazer will teach the children how to deliver greetings in French and discuss school life.

More info on our curriculum can be found on the school website.

Naming items...

Please can all personal items be named wherever possible. Coats, schools jumpers and stationary all go missing throughout the year and it is so much easier to find if it is named. Thank you.
