November 2022

Friday 18th November, 2022

It's been a very busy day in school and the children always enjoy a non-uniform day! The year 6 children were excellent at organising different stalls, and I'm sure we will have raised a good amount for the charity.

We've been pleased with how well the swimming sessions have gone this term. Currently, Year 6 are swimming every Friday. After Christmas, the Year 5 children will get the opportunity to swim at Sprowston Academy.

Well done to all our cross country runners this afternoon. Mr Arthur told me how well you did, and I hope you all enjoyed the race and running for the school. I heard that the weather wasn't too kind at the end of the race too!

We head into the last full week of November. I hope everyone has a good weekend.

Kind regards

Matt Walton

Year 4 Ancient Greek Day

On Wednesday 10th November Year 4 spent the day exploring what life was really like as an Ancient Greek. They took part in several exciting activities throughout the day and even finished with a feast! A huge thank you to everyone who helped - especially the parents who kindly gave up their time to come along and join in.

On Ancient Greek day, everyone dressed up as Ancient Greeks. There were many different activities for us to do. Some of us were rich and had slaves. At the end we got to watch some plays and the servants gave food to the Greeks.

Sonny

The first activity was the Olympic Games. There were many activities like shot put and marathon running. We also did lots of different activities, one of which was making cures. The cure for a cough was poppy seed! There were many cures we had to make by crunching them up and putting them in a bag.

Gioia

I enjoyed the soap carving - we had to carve in the Greek alphabet. I carved in my name.

Year 3 Cathedral Trip

On Tuesday, Year 3 spent the day at the Norwich Cathedral. The discovered lots of fascinating facts about the cathedral and its surrounding area. Did you know that the grounds of Norwich Cathedral are bigger than Carrow Road?

We did some activities like stained-glass windows, and we learnt about the good shepherd. The best part was learning about baptising the baby! Did you know that the font in the cathedral came from Rowntree's Chocolate Factory in Norwich?!

Cooperative Learning

As part of our school improvement work this term, we are putting a renewed emphasis on cooperative learning in the classroom over the next month. We have a range of techniques that we use to get the children cooperating, collaborating and sharing thoughts and ideas. We have more information about cooperative learning on our website - please click on the link to read more: Cooperative Learning at SJS

Year 5/6 football team

Congratulations to the Year 5/6 football team for winning all their league matches this term. They are also still in the cup. Over the term they beat White Woman Lane, Falcon and Taverham in the league without conceding a goal! We look forward to seeing how they do after Christmas and hopefully another cup run!

Well done to Joel, Kian, Sonny, Charlie, Callum, Isaac, Cruz, Austin, Theo, Leo, Olly and Oliver.

Cross-country

The second race of the Norwich Primary Schools Athletic Association cross-country season took part at Falcon Junior today. Even the wind and rain couldn’t dampen the spirits of our intrepid runners as they cheered on their teammates. A big well done to all our runners. Our team for this race was: Oscar, Joel, Zach, Olivia, Leila, Freya, Beverley and Roxy from Year 6. Ethan H, Nathan, Talia and Freya from Year 5 and Ethan from Year 4.

Thanks to everyone who came to support today. It was great to see so many cheering the children on from the sidelines.

Food Bank Appeal

Like always, the generosity of Sprowston Junior parents is clear to see once again. We already have a fantastic amount of food for the children to take to the food bank and we are collecting for another week before we take the food along ready to be distributed.

A special thank-you to everyone at Tesco Blue Boar for their kind donations as well. It will be added to our school donations when the Pupil Ambassadors visit the Norwich Foodbank on 30th November.

Children In Need

We've had a lot of fun today and a big thank you as ever to Mrs Blazer for making hundreds of delicious cookies and to the House Captains and their Year 6 friends for creating lots of enjoyable games for the children to play at lunchtime. This included year 6 children making and selling their own items for charity. Thank you to parents & carers for supporting our fund-raising efforts today! We will let you know how much we've raised!

Marvellous Me

We are nearly ready to start using the app 'Marvellous Me' and your child will be bringing home a letter next week with a sign-up code. The letter also has a slip that needs returning to say that you are happy for your child's photo to be on the app. To view the app, you have to be a parent or carer with a code issued by the school. No one else is able to view the school's account. When you've signed up, look out for the first news from your child's class. Teachers will also be able to send you reminders through the app about events happening in the year group.

Anti-Bullying Week

All years have had the opportunity to discuss and reflect on this year's theme 'Reach out'.

The year groups have taken part in the BBC Anti-bullying Live Lesson this week which looked at what bullying is, why people choose to bully and how (and where) you can get help if you are being bullied. There were some amazing and thought-provoking discussions in classes across the school. Children thought about who they could 'reach out' to if they needed help and advice and also how they could be a good ally.

Here is a link to the Live Lesson if you would like to watch it at home: Anti-Bullying Week 2022 – Live Lesson
