Dear Parents & Carers

We were delighted to hear how much the cast of King Lear enjoyed performing in our school last week and I heard so much good feedback from the pupils. Some children said it was the best experience all term, whilst others said that although they didn't fully understand it at times, they really enjoyed the acting and thought it was very good. We will continue to look for arts' opportunities for the children to experience, as well as trips out to see different performances.

We are looking forward to the carol concerts next week. With the concerts and all the other Christmas events coming up, it will be a busy and enjoyable end to the term.

Thank you for supporting the Christmas 'foodbank' appeal. Year-on-year we have a wonderful selection of items to take to the 'foodbank' and we really appreciate the support and generosity from our families. Read about how much the collection weighed below!

I need to tell you about a couple of staff changes when we return in January. Firstly, Mrs Connell will be returning after her maternity leave and will be replacing Mr Clark teaching in Filby & Martham. We look forward to having Mrs Connell back with us and say a big thank you to Mr Clark for all he has done in Year 3/4 this term and wish him all the best.

We are also saying goodbye to Miss Read at Christmas. Miss Read has thoroughly enjoyed working at Sprowston Junior for the past 11 years and is taking many fond memories with her as she embarks on a new career after the holidays. We say a massive thank you to Miss Read for all her hard work over the past decade or so, and we wish her all the very best for the future.

Have a lovely weekend.

Kind regards

Matt Walton, Headteacher

Norwich Foodbank Christmas Collection

On Wednesday this week, our Pupil Ambassadors recently visited the Norwich Foodbank to deliver this term’s school collection — and we’re delighted to share that it weighed an incredible 93kg! To put that into perspective, that’s roughly the same weight as an adult male kangaroo or a large male Komodo dragon. When all the donations were stacked up in crates, it was as tall as Jessica!

During the visit, the children helped to weigh and sort the donations, as well as relabel a batch of French instant mash potato with butter (purée de pommes de terre instantanée au beurre) destined for distribution. They worked brilliantly as a team and represented our school with real maturity and enthusiasm.

A huge thank you to every family who contributed items. Your generosity will make a meaningful difference to people across Norwich.

The Pupil Ambassadors will be returning to the Norwich Foodbank in the New Year to continue helping in the warehouse.

Royal Shakespeare Company production of King Lear

Last week, Sprowston Junior School was delighted to welcome the Royal Shakespeare Company for a special performance of King Lear, joined by pupils from Falcon Junior School. The cast stayed with us for two days, and excitement filled the building as children spotted the actors in full costume walking along the corridors!

The performance itself was nothing short of amazing. Children from both schools were incredibly attentive and enthusiastic, creating a fantastic atmosphere. The cast praised our pupils highly, telling us that they were among the best audiences they’ve had on their entire tour!

We are extremely proud of how brilliantly our children represented the school, and we look forward to working with the RSC again soon for more inspiring experiences in the arts.

We unfortunately were not permitted to take photos of the performance in school,  but the photos below give you a flavour of the performance seen!

NPSAA Cross Country at Eaton Park – Friday 5th December

Our pupils represented the school brilliantly at the NPSAA cross-country event in Eaton Park today. It was a bracing afternoon of running, but the children approached each race with determination, enthusiasm and fantastic team spirit. Everyone was in good spirits throughout, cheering each other on and showing great resilience.

A huge thank you to the parents who came along to support — your encouragement made a real difference.

Well done to all the runners for doing us proud! The next race is at Langley Prep on Thursday 15th February.

Year 6 Visit to The Nest for Crucial Crew

Today our Year 6 pupils took part in an exciting and highly valuable visit to The Nest for this year’s Crucial Crew event. Crucial Crew is a multi-agency, interactive safety programme designed to help children develop the essential skills they need to stay safe, make responsible choices, and grow into confident, informed young citizens.

Throughout the morning, the children moved around a series of hands-on workshops led by expert teams, each focusing on an important aspect of personal safety and wellbeing. Sessions included:

  • Fire Service – fire safety and how to respond safely in an emergency
  • RNLI/Coastguard – staying safe near water and understanding coastal hazards
  • Norfolk Police – internet safety and recognising anti-social behaviour
  • East Anglian Air Ambulance – learning vital CPR skills
  • Healthy Child, NHS – exploring wellbeing and mental health
  • Brave Futures – understanding consent and personal boundaries
  • St John Ambulance – putting someone in the recovery position

Our pupils engaged brilliantly throughout the day, asking thoughtful questions and showing real maturity as they practised new skills. Experiences like Crucial Crew play an important part in preparing our Year 6s for the next steps in their lives, equipping them with knowledge that genuinely can make a difference.

A huge thank you to all the partner organisations who made the day so memorable and impactful.

Year 4 Bikeability

The year 4 children really enjoyed their first taste of Bikeability. The program really supports the children's safety and control when riding their bike. Today, the children were on the playground practising their skills. If the children go on to test themselves at Level 2, they will progress onto the roads, improving their skills further.

The children enjoyed today's session and were a fantastic group to work with!
