Friday 1st May 2025

Dear Parents and Carers,

What a fantastic turnout we had at our football final this week! It was wonderful to see the largest crowd I've ever witnessed at a Sprowston Junior match. Your support means the world to the children. I hope they enjoyed the experience even though the result wasn't quite what we wanted.

As we look ahead, we have VE Day celebrations next week. We're inviting all pupils to come to school dressed in red, white, and blue to mark this important historical event. We'll also be doing some activities in year groups during the day and eating outside at lunchtime. Please see below.

As the temperatures begin to rise, please ensure your child brings a water bottle to school daily. Staying hydrated is important, especially during the warmer days. Please also put sun cream on before school and sun hats are recommended too.

To help you plan ahead, we've included a list of all the key dates for the summer term in this newsletter. We have many lovely events to look forward to as the term progresses.

Have a lovely long weekend.

Kind regards

Matt Walton Headteacher

VE Day Celebrations

To mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day, we are asking the children to come dressed in red, white and blue next Thursday if they would like to. If it is a PE day, the children will not need a change of clothes. During the day, we will mark the event in year groups. At lunch time, we will be giving the children a chance to eat their packed lunches outside (pic-nic style). If a child normally has a school hot dinner - we will be allowing them to eat outside too if they would like to. Let's hope we have nice weather!

VE Day 80th Anniversary - A Shared Celebration

Cubitt Cup Final

The Nest provided a perfect venue for the Cubitt Cup final. Sprowston Junior were the first ever winners of the trophy in the 1960s, and we were hoping to add our name to the trophy once again.

We knew the game was going to be a close affair and that is how it turned out. In the first half, we pushed forward and tried to create chances without having too much success against a strong Falcon team. Ethan, in goal, was commanding his area well and dealt comfortably with Falcon's efforts. Sonny, Jack and Toby defended superbly to keep the score at 0-0 at half-time.

In the second half, the game continued in the same pattern. We were able to make some in-roads into the Falcon penalty area but a clear-cut chance just wouldn't come. Ethan was having a great game in goal and kept us in it, until a break down our left led to Falcon slotting the ball away to lead 1-0. After that, we rode our luck, but we were still hanging on at 1-0 with the clock ticking down. With a minute to go, Wanye managed to win the ball back and attacked down our right. He put a dangerous ball over to the far post and Julian was inches away from a spectacular equaliser. The game finished 1-0 to Falcon who were worthy winners on the day.

Well done to the team - a fantastic achievement to reach the final and hopefully an afternoon to remember.

Music outside in the sun!

Year 5 made the best of the sunny weather this week by working on their musical skills outside. The children were composing their own  'carnival of the animals' pieces. Each child picked an animal to compose about and everyone had to guess their animal. This was in preparation for their school trip.

Biking

The temporary bike shed is working well, and it has been lovely to see it quite full this week. Please can we remind all parents and pupils to walk their bikes in the playground. Thank you.

Writing

As we continue into the last term of the school year, we continue to put a spotlight on improving writing skills across the school. It has been fantastic to see many examples of great progress in children's writing and improvement in their handwriting skills. We will continue this focus this term. If you get a moment, have a chat with your child and find out what they feel has been their best piece of writing this year (or the piece they enjoyed writing the most) and ask them what aspect of writing they feel they have made the best progress in since September. Please do share any interesting feedback!
