Friday 4th April 2025

Dear Parents & Carers

We've reached the end of another term and with the lighter evenings and better weather, it is a lovely time for the children to have a decent break.

Yesterday we had some good news regarding the building works for our new SHIP building and we are now looking forward to seeing preparations beginning over Easter. We have spent some time today finishing removing items from the Horsa block. It is a shame to see a piece of history disappearing, but it has lasted rather longer than anticipated! It is suggested they expected the blocks to last 10 years (ours was built in the late 1940s). Horsa is the acronym for the 'Hutting Operation for the Raising of the School-Leaving Age', a programme of hut-building in schools introduced by the UK Government to support the expansion of education, raising the school age to 15.

I was delighted to find out that the Year 5/6 football team had made it through to the final with an excellent team display. Well done to all the team and we can now look forward to the final on April 30th.

Also, a big well done to all those who took part in the F1 competition this year. As you will find out below, the teams did themselves proud, and I'm sure they learnt a lot from the experience.

We have listed most of the key dates for the rest of the summer term below with more to be added. I wish everyone a Happy Easter and look forward to an enjoyable summer term ahead.

Kind regards

Matt Walton, Headteacher

Exciting News!

We are hoping that planning permission for the new SHIP building is granted over the Easter period. When we return, part of the car park and part of the playground will possibly be blocked off as preparations are put into place for the new SHIP building works. The bike shed will no longer be in use and instead, we will have a temporary area on the playground for bikes. After Easter, children will need to walk their bikes into the playground and we will be on hand to help them.

One of the entrances to the school at the front will be blocked off for the next 8 months. The only access at the front of the school will be through the gateway between the infant and junior schools. Space in the car park will be extremely tight, and it is important that parents and carers do not use the car park, unless this has been agreed. Both schools will be putting a permit system in place. If you have any queries about this, please get in touch.

We are hoping to involve the children in the SHIP building process and the building company 'Munnings' will be talking to the children in assembly early in the summer term.

Science Fair!

To finish this term's science club, Mr Reeds organised a 'Science Fair' with a range of exciting experiments. The children were brilliant with helping to set up the experiments and explaining them to adults and pupils.

It was a lot of fun! I was making explosions! I wish I could do it again!

Gabriel

We used canisters and filled them with water. We put tablets in them called alkaseltzer and put the lid on. We then flipped it over so it would explode. One of mine hit the roof!

Hayley

I was doing the balloon trick. We rubbed the balloon on someone's head to create static electricity and then put it next to the can which was laying down. When it worked well, a positive charge moved the can across the table.

The Grand Final!

Our Sprowston's Got Talent acts had their chance to shine in this year's grand final. The Year 6 House Captains took charge and hosted a fabulous afternoon of entertainment. They were joined by a very special guest judge, Mrs Magee!

There was no sign of nerves as each act took to the stage in front of a packed house. We were treated to singing, dancing, cheer, magic, jokes and riddles.

Well done to everyone who took part and helped make it such an enjoyable event. There can only be one winner though. Our House Captains have collected, counted and scrutinised the results from each class.

Here's the top three...

Third place: Filby Dancers

Second place: Sonny

First place and our winners: Martham Cheer Group

A special mention to Salhouse who have been looking at the lyrics to the James Bay song 'Hold back the river' in Reading for Meaning sessions this term. They discussed the meanings and choice of words and how they impacted on the sound and feel of the song. They enjoyed the song so much that they decided to write their own version, which they performed as a finale to the Talent Show.

A big thank you to the audience who cheered, applauded and supported in equal measure.

F1 in School final results

Last week, three teams travelled to the Magna Centre, Rotherham to compete in the F1 in Schools National Finals.

The Lightning Divas, Screaming Chameleons and Virtual Falcons got the chance to build on their experience at Regionals from earlier this year and compete against teams from across the UK and Hong Kong.

The day included taking part in racing live on YouTube, design portfolio interviews, pit display judging and presenting to a panel of judges about their F1 in Schools journey.

They were joined by Wheel Sparkz who, although they didn't compete this year, got to experience Nationals for the first time. We're sure they'll be back next year to take on the rest of the competition.

While the judges counted scores in preparation for the final awards ceremony, the children got to visit the Magna Science Adventure Centre. It was the icing on  the cake, and they had a brilliant time exploring the Fire, Water and Earth zones. Everyone agreed that if you get the chance, you've got to visit for yourselves.

The finals placings for our three teams are Lightning Divas: 11th, Screaming Chameleons: 23rd and Virtual Falcons: 46th. Well done to all the teams, we're really proud of you. Thank you to everyone who helped, supported and sponsored the teams - your contribution was amazing. A special thank you to Graham and Tom who gave up their time to come in to F1 Club each week to help the Lightning Divas. Tom joined the team at Regionals and Graham joined them at Nationals.

This was the last ever F1 in Schools competition, as the team behind the event is rebranding. We're looking forward to taking part in the inaugural STEM racing (supported by Formula One) competition next year. Click here for more information on STEM Racing.

Year 5/6 football team

The Year 5/6 headed to Colman Junior for a semi-final match. The team settled into the game well and the first exchanges showed that the team had a good chance of progressing. As the first half went on, we just couldn't find the breakthrough and the half finished 0-0.

The second half was a different story and we were on top but finally getting some joy in front of goal. We eventually came out 3-1 winners with Wanye scoring two goals and Julian also on the score sheet. Special mention to Sonny who was awarded player of the match and also to Wilfred for playing his first school game. The final is to be played against Falcon Junior at The Nest on 30th April. We look forward to what should be a great game.
