Dear Parents & Carers

Parents' evenings this past week have given us a good opportunity to catch up with the majority of parents & carers and discuss the children's progress this year so far. We hope you found the meeting productive and there's still plenty of learning time left this academic year for the children to keep building on their key skills.

We've enjoyed the 'dress-up' day today and seen some very creative ideas. Well done to all the children and thank you to all parents & carers for all the efforts that have gone into dressing-up. Well done also to the children who sent in pictures of reading in different places, these even included a wheelie bin and a shower! We had some great entries across the different competitions. Many thanks to Mrs Wills for organising the week.

Heading into next week, please take note of the information below regarding the roadworks. This will no doubt cause a few issues as the week develops.

After school on Monday, the science club are running a 'Science Fair' from 3:15pm in the school hall. All children and parents are welcome if you are able to go along and support the fair.

Please can I remind everyone not to park in the school car park unless permission has been given. The area is very busy with children and parents/carers walking through in the mornings and afternoons. We are hoping that the new 'Ship' building works will commence after Easter and this will further reduce the capacity in the car park area.

It looks like a lovely weekend ahead. I hope everyone has a pleasant one.

Kind regards

Matt Walton, Headteacher

World Book Day

The school has been full of colour today and we've seen some fantastic ideas for World Book Day dressing up! It is always lovely to see children enjoying being creative and this year's dress as a 'word' gave everyone the chance to express themselves in many wonderful ways.

It's always very difficult picking 'dress up' winners as so many were great.  The following children were chosen for their wonderful ideas/costumes:

Katie, Alexa, Phoebe, Daisy, Jacob, Millie & Poppy

We also want to say a big well done to the following children for all their efforts in the competitions across the week:

Kayla, Macie, Taylor, Theo T, Ellis, Maddie, Arlo, Maya, Eve, Snoopy, Nicholas and Bertie.

Year 5 visit Sutton Hoo

Year 5 had a super trip to Sutton Hoo this week to enrich their understanding of Anglo-Saxon history. The weather was very kind to them and it made for a lovely day of learning in Suffolk.

Firstly, we went to the museum to look at all the artefacts, swords and shields. Next we went to the mounds which are one of the big attractions of Sutton Hoo. After that, we went up the look-out tower to look over the mounds.

After lunch, we had a little adventure. We had to find words and out them together - the answer was shields. Our favourite parts were the afternoon activity and the 'look-out tower' - we could see 18 mounds from the high position.

We thought it was a great school trip!

Mr Bird Retires

We said a sad farewell to Mr Bird in  assembly last week. Mr Bird has been the caretaker at Sprowston Junior since 2008 and has been a fantastic member of the team during this period. We will miss his expertise and advice to do with all aspects of the school building  and we wish him all the very best for his retirement.

Mr Arthur & Mrs Harrison, along with a team of artists created 'Mr Bird' the Giraffe to celebrate Mr Bird's time at the school! We were able to introduce Mr Bird to 'Mr Bird' during assembly and we all think the children and teachers did a brilliant job. 'Mr Bird' will be spending some time in the forum along with the other animals before returning to SJS later in the summer.

Our new caretaker is Mr Belson. We welcome him to the SJS team!

Roadworks!

Please be aware that Recreation Ground Road will be closed at the Allens Avenue end from March 10 - 22. The road will then be closed at the Wroxham Road end from April 7 - 22. This is the information we have been able to find out and it is correct to the best of our knowledge.

We realise this will cause quite a bit of disruption for everyone and it is recommended to avoid having to drive down the road during the dates of the works. We understand this may cause a few issues with punctuality between those dates and we understand if this adds a few minutes onto journeys at both ends of the day.

Sprowston's Got Talent

If you were able to wander through the playground this last couple of weeks you would have seen many routines being ironed out in readiness for a performance in from of the SGT judges!

The children are excited to perform and we look forward to seeing their fantastic efforts in the next few weeks and seeing who makes it through to the SGT finals!

Science Fair

Please join the Science Club & Mr Reeds for a Science Fair after school on Monday. They will be in the school hall from 3:15pm, showing parents, carers and children a number of  interesting and exciting scientific experiments. Please go to the hall straight after school.

Year 5/6 Football

In the last fortnight, the team has played three games.

In the cup quarter final, the team travelled to Poringland and played out a very close game, the score being 1-1 at full-time. In extra time, we were able to get ahead and see the game out. The final score being 2-1. Wanye and Jason were the goalscorers.

In the league, we've had mixed results. A fantastic 1-0 win against Falcon (Wanye scoring our goal) and an unlucky 3-1 defeat against Horsford (Alfie scoring our goal).

We look forward to seeing who we are playing in the semi-finals!

Sprowston SOS Club

You may have heard that Sprowston SOS Club is unfortunately having to close in April, due to Cecil Gowing no longer being able to accommodate them. We put out an online form this week to seek people's views on wrap-around care and we thank those who shared their views. We are reviewing the information and looking at any potential options for future provision.

Mr Bird delivered to Break!

This morning our Pupil Ambassadors and Giraffe-tists took Mr Bird (our school Go Go Giraffe) to the Norfolk Showground. He will remain there with Peter and the Break team until it is time for him to be displayed in the Forum.

While the children were there, they got a sneak preview of some of the Go Go Safari designs as well as meeting an artist responsible for creating one of the amazing animals we will be seeing in Norwich and across the county later this year.

Thank you to the Friends of school for once again paying for our school Go-Go animal. We are starting to get quite a collection!

We will let you know more about the Go Go Safari trail nearer the time, so watch this space!
