Friday 31st January, 2025

Dear Parents & Carers

We were delighted to find out that some of our F1 one teams won awards at the F1 Regional Finals yesterday. Well done to all the teams that took part and congratulations to the team that has qualified for the finals. Mr Arthur took a team to the finals in Rotherham last year and some finalists had flown in from abroad for the event!  Very exciting! Read more about it below.

We welcome Year 5 family members in for lunch next week and also look forward to the Year 4 parents & carers joining us for a maths café the following week.

The newsletter has examples of some of the enjoyable activities across the curriculum this week. Another two weeks of learning ahead before we reach the middle of February (unbelievable!).

Next week also sees us having a Shakespeare Day. A letter from Miss Watts has been emailed out today. We have tried to list some simple ideas for costumes and do not expect families to need to go out and buy costumes. If you have any queries, please ask your child's teacher. Dressing up is entirely optional.

Have an enjoyable weekend.

Kind regards

Matt Walton, Headteacher

Shakespeare Day (Friday 7th Feb)

On Friday 7th February, the year 6 Art/Shakespeare ambassadors will be hosting Sprowston Junior School's very first Shakespeare Day.

Children are invited to dress up as their favourite Shakespearean character whether that be one of Macbeth's witches, one of the Midsummer Night's Dream's fairies or a member of Hamlet or King Richard III's army.

Throughout the day there will be a variety of different Shakespearean activities happening across the school and in the afternoon year 5 and 6 will be watching an invite-only live screening of the Royal Shakespeare Company's production of 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' starring Horrible Histories Mathew Baynton (https://www.rsc.org.uk/a-midsummer-nights-dream/trailer). During that week, year 3 and 4 will also be watching a production of  'A Midsummer Night's Dream' in their classes.

F1 Regional Finals Day

After weeks of preparation, the big day was here. The members of F1 Club made their way to Sprowston Community academy for this year’s F1 in School Primary Class Regional Finals. The last few weeks have seen the children design and build their very own paper racing car, work alongside some amazing volunteers, raise almost £175, produce a design and development portfolio and rehearse for the verbal presentation. Yesterday, they were looking to make all the hard work count as they battled it out with teams from other local schools for a place at the National Finals in March.

The four teams (Wheel Sparkz, Virtual Falcons, Screaming Chameleons and the Lightning Divas) arrived and set up their pit display. Once the organisers had introduced the event, it was competition time. Throughout the day the teams were judged on four main categories: car design, racing the car along a track, a verbal presentation followed by a Q&A and an interview about the design portfolio. It was a pretty intense, but incredibly enjoyable, day for everyone.

Once all four parts of the competition were done and dusted it was results time. With only three places at Nationals up for grabs the tension was palpable.

This is the third year that F1 Club has entered the competition and it is the year with most awards across all four teams – well done F1 Clubbers!

Here are the final results:

Best verbal presentation: Lightning Divas

Best portfolio: Wheel Sparkz

Best research and design: Wheel Sparkz

Best team identity: Screaming Chameleons

2nd place overall (and qualifying for Nationals!): Virtual Falcons

A huge well done to all the F1 Club members this year. The teams are:

Lightning Divas: Amber, Ada, Gioia, Liv, Isla, Poppy.

Screaming Chameleons: Ethan, Jasper, Millie, Bertie

Wheel Sparkz: Bia, Zariya, Grace, Florence

Virtual Falcons: Xheison, Kacper, Horace, Wilfred

Here’s what some of them thought of the competition:

“We had to give a presentation about our car design to three judges. I felt very nervous but enjoyed it. The whole day great.” Wilfred

“I enjoyed looking at everyone’s pit displays and I really enjoyed watching the teams race their cars.” Amber

“I really enjoyed racing our car as I got to push the button. I loved setting up our pit display and giving out the stickers.” Liv

“It was hard work, but really enjoyable. The best thing was getting to race the cars.” Ethan

“I really enjoyed setting up the pit display. Making the track was tricky,  but it looked great when it was finished.” Jasper

“I really enjoyed the verbal presentation. I was nervous at first but doing it with all my friends made it easier.” Isla

“I loved all the freebies – the stickers, badges, sweets and of course cakes!” Millie

“I really enjoyed the fundraiser. Being hit in the face by wet sponges was great fun and the fact we raised so much money was amazing!” Bertie

“The Regionals were less scary than last year. The team did really well and we’re really excited about going to Nationals again.” Xheison

A massive thank you to Graham and Tom who have come in to help Lightning Divas. Thanks as well to Jacob who came in to help Wheel Sparkz. Thanks to Mrs Bryant for all her help in making the cars and the badges (a big hit yesterday!) and last but not least thanks to the F1 Club parents/carers for all your support over the last few weeks.

Year 6 D/T

Year 6 have been making motorised trains in Design & Technology.

We built the trains using a range of materials, but most of the structure was wood. We put the electrics together and connected them, and the wire went into the engine. We then went outside and tested them. Ours broke down but later it worked and it was off!

New Non-fiction Books

We've been spending money on non-fiction books to keep developing the selection of books the children can read in Accelerated Reader time. The books cover a wide range of levels and subjects and we hope they will be loved and enjoyed by all the children!

Here's just a few of the new books to read:

This week in the SHIP!

The SHIP children have been looking at how the earth orbits the sun and how shadows are made longer or shorter.

They also enjoyed a visit from the dental nurse where she showed us just how long we should do our teeth and reminded us it is best to clean our teeth at least  half an hour after eating.

We also enjoyed doing the sensory circuits made by our children.
