Year 6 Newsletter | Spring Term

In the first term, most of the children settled in quickly and they showed a fantastic attitude to learning.

In Art, the children enjoyed their work on the artist Giacometti and produced some creative wire sculptures. In Science, we traced the history of life on earth, looking at various organisms as well as studying Light.

At the end of the term, it was wonderful to finish off with a very joyful Christmas Carol Service at St Cuthberts Church. Lots of children also participated in interschool sporting competitions including football and cross-country.

In the spring term, we will be looking to build on last term’s successes.

Our Spring Curriculum:

Literacy: We will begin this term by exploring poetry through the unique book 'Love that Dog'. Then, for the very first time in Year 6, we will be studying Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, which we are extremely excited about.

Maths: We will start the term learning about ratios and proportions before moving on to algebra and statistics. 

Science: In Science, we will be finishing off our work on light and then investigating the exciting world of electricity. 

History: We will be completing our learning on Medieval Norwich at the start of the Spring term and then moving on to the terrible tutors.  

R.W.E: This term we are going to be learning about Judaism, focusing on its key beliefs and celebrations. 

Art: We will be exploring street art this term, centred around the work of the mysterious Banksy. 

DT: Having completed our transporting tomato challenge, in the second half of the term we will be exploring renewable energy and climate change through the book 'The Boy who Harnessed the Wind'. Children will have the chance to design and model a method of producing electricity using scrap materials. 

Music: This term 

PE: In PE we will be looking at handball before moving on to football and tennis when the weather gets a little warmer.

Homework

To help prepare for SATs, every child has already been given revision books, which will form the basis of homework. In addition to this, we will be encouraging the children to read regularly at home and asking them about what texts they enjoy most. Please support your child in completing their homework and talk about their reading, as it is invaluable in consolidating their learning inside the classroom.

Home School Journal

We expect the children to have their journals with them in class every day. . Please can you sign the diaries and make sure the children are completing their reading records. Please feel free to write any comments that you feel appropriate for us to know.

Weekly Routines

Please make sure that your child comes to school fully prepared with the right equipment every day. We expect every child to come to school with their own blue handwriting pen (not a biro), pencil and glue stick, as this is something that will be expected at high school. Other stationery such as crayons, felt-tips, rubbers and rulers would be useful too.

Both classes will need to come into school in their PE kit on:

Thursdays and Fridays for both classes

Children should wear plain white t-shirts and black shorts or jogging bottoms (find further details in their diaries). Long hair needs to be tied back and earrings need to be removed.

SATs Information

SATs week will be taking place on the week commencing Monday 13^th May 2024. Your child needs to be in school this week, so please do not book any holidays.

Over the coming weeks, we will be starting extra reading and maths groups to support pupils in the lead up to SATs
