Tuesday 28th November, 2023

I was amazed at the kindness and generosity of family and friends last week when we were raising money for Children In Need. The final total for Sprowston Junior School stands at £1974.94 which is absolutely fantastic and arguably a record amount for the school! A massive thank you to everyone and all the sponsor money given to the children for the 'Run Pudsey' event. We are looking forward to receiving the medals and giving them to the children.

With December starting at the end of this week, the season of advent begins! The carol concert preparations have begun, and we have a lot of lovely events coming up for the children. A separate email has been sent to summarise all the events.

As we mention below, our current attendance is under the target attendance we have set of 94.5%. Please help us to reach that figure by making sure your child is in school as much as possible; we understand children need time off if they are feeling really poorly, but we ask that children attend school as much as they possibly can to help them do their very best.

We had a number of children represent the school and run for Norwich East at the county cross country championships this week. Please see how they got on below. We're proud of them all!

Apologies that the newsletter is a few days late being sent out. We've changed internet suppliers and this has caused us a number of issues!

Kind regards

Matt Walton, Headteacher

Children In Need - Friday 17th November

We had a brilliant day last Friday celebrating Children In Need! Across the day we had a number of events and a non-uniform day. Many children and adults baked cakes and cookies to seel and the children enjoyed those at break-time!

At lunch-time, the House Captains did a fantastic job in organising a range of games for the children to play. We had football and basketball shooting, Higher and Lower, Guess the name of the teddy and Bottle flipping. A big thank you to the House Captains and the other Year 6 children who helped. You did a tremendous job!

Lastly, 39 children signed up for 'Run Pudsey' - each child only needed to raise at least £1, but the amount raised was staggering! In total, the children raised over £1600 which was just fantastic! A massive thank you from all at SJS for supporting the children so well!

Cross-country at High Lodge – Norfolk Games (Wednesday 22nd Nov)

Six of our cross-country runners qualified to represent the Norwich East Sports Partnership at the Norfolk Games cross-country event on Wednesday 7th November. They faced stiff competition as they were up against the very best runners from all the School Sports Partnerships across Norwich. A massive well done to them all for not only qualifying but also representing our school so well. A big thank you to all the parents/carers who provided transport and moral support during the day.

Our runners in this event were:

Year 4: Wanye (finished 13th), Jacob (finished 45th) and Jack (finished 50th)

Year 5: Ethan (finished 28th)

Year 6: Phoebe (finished 18th) and Talia (finished 21st).

Cross-country at Falcon Junior (Friday 17th Nov)

Last Friday our cross-country runners took on children from across Norwich in the second Norwich Primary Schools Athletics Association cross country race of the season. It was a bright but chilly afternoon – perfect for cross-country. Both races had over 100 runners taking part and our representatives did themselves proud.

Well done everyone who took part. Our team for this event was: Phoebe, Talia, Eliza, Ani, Carissa, Amber, Ethan T, Ethan H, Dexter, Jasper, Lewis, Jack and Filip.

A big thank you to all the parents/carers who came to support and cheer the runners on.

The next race will be at Eaton Park on Friday 8th December.

Year 3 cookie sale

Year 3 have been busy selling cookies to help raise money to go towards their exciting trip to the theatre.

The line stretched the width of the playground this week with children and adults snapping up some delicious home-made cookies.

Thanks to everyone who brought in money to help support Year 3.

Girls' Football - Cup match

The girls' football team played their first cup match away at St Michael's Junior School. The team went about the task with an excellent attitude and soon found themselves in front. We scored four goals in the first half. Freya (2), Phoebe and Eliza scored to put the team 4-0 up at half time.

In the second half, Freya continued her goal scoring form with another 3 goals and Phoebe scored the last goal to make the final score 8-0 to us.

A massive well done to all the girls for a great win - Freya, Phoebe, Eliza, Ani, Yin-Hei, Lexi, Penny and Bella.

We look forward to seeing who the girls are playing in the next round of the cup!

Attendance

We were delighted to see our attendance figures above the national average last year and from September, we set ourselves an ambitious target of 94.5% for the year. At the moment, we have had a slightly disappointing term with our attendance at 93.94%. Attendance at school every day is very important and missing days does disrupt a child's learning and understanding of concepts. Please work with us to support good attendance across the school, and we hope to see the attendance rate rise as we move further into the school year. We will be celebrating excellent attendance and 100% attendance at the end of term.

Norwich Foodbank Christmas Collection

A huge thank you to everyone who has brought in items for the Norwich Foodbank collection. As you can see, we have an amazing selection already.

The Pupil Ambassadors will be delivering the donations to the Foodbank on Thursday 7th December, so you still have time to bring something in if you would like to.
