 Friday 22nd September, 2023

This has been the oddest of weeks for me.  It's the first time I've been off school ill since I became Headteacher in 2015. Covid certainly has a lot to answer for! I've kept in touch with school this week, and the staff have worked very hard to support each other with the team taking quite a hit with a number of staff away.

We've had a positive start to the school year across all year groups and the children have settled back well into the routines. Particularly well done to the Year 3 children who have taken the last couple of weeks in their stride and I know the year 3 team have enjoyed their first few weeks with them.

We have year group coffee mornings coming up soon with the opportunity to read with your child in school too. Please see the information below.

We will also soon be sending home a date for our Friends' AGM.  Everyone parent/carer is automatically a member of the 'Friends' and we would encourage as many people as possible, if time allows, to support the work they do for the school.

Have a lovely weekend.

Matt Walton, Headteacher

Time Capsule Work in Year 5

Year 5 were invited to take part in an exciting time capsule project by the Mousehold View Care Home.

Over the past two weeks, the children in Salhouse and Wroxham classes have been discussing what they would like to include in their time capsule. Ideas have included: information about life at Sprowston Junior school, what it's like to be a 9/10 year old in 2023 and some wonderful illustrations. If that wasn't exciting enough, joining these ideas and illustrations will be something from Stephen Fry!

Today was the day that the time capsule was buried at the Mousehold View Care Home. Billy, Ivy, Sonny and Gioia went along with Ms Clark to represent Year 5 at the celebration. They were joined by childrne and staff from Sprowston Infant School who also filled a time capsule to be burried.

"We really enjoyed burying the time capsule. We got to put soil on top of it and cover it - no-one will see it again for 100 years! We had our photograph taken with everyone who was there and even got a goody bag!" Sonny, Billy, Ivy and Gioia.

Year 3's Week

We have been learning all about SJS through the use of picture books:

  • When mum turned into a monster
  • Stuck
  • The koala’s who could
  • Dot
  • Big bag of worries
  • My mouth is a volcano
  • Have you filled a  bucket?
  • The squirrels who squabbled.
  • Bog Baby

We have used these to learn about rules, friendship, expectations, respect, responsibility and how to be ready.

We have also started our 'Healthy living' DT cookery - starting with making a layered fruit/yoghurt/honey dessert. Filby class learnt how to puree apples. They then designed a fruit/yogurt layer cup. They demonstrated  excellent peeling, chopping and dicing skills.

Coffee Mornings

We will be having regular coffee mornings over the year. At each coffee morning, teaching staff will be available to have a chat about how your child is getting on, as well as there being a chance to read with your child or to see their books.

This term the dates are as follows:

Tuesday 3rd October - Year 3/4 (9am)

Wednesday 18th October - Year 5/6 (9am)

You don't need to sign up for the mornings, please wait on the playground when the children have gone in, and we'll invite you into the school library.

School News App

If you haven't yet downloaded the school news app yet, the app is a handy place to read the latest newsletters or to look at school dates coming up. You can also login to the parent portal for signing up for parents' evening and seeing attendance percentages too.

Search for the School News App on the app store and type in the school name to find it.

Thank you to everyone who has already signed up to Marvellous Me. We currently have almost 130 parents who have downloaded the app and are making the most of being able to find out what their children have been up, receive 'thumbs ups' and other notifications as well as receiving messages from classes.

Here are links to a parent walk through guide and a 'parent app explained' video with some useful information about how to get started.

If you have any questions, or need some help, please let a member of the year group team know. You can also email Mr Arthur: deputy@sprowstonjunior.norfolk.sch.uk who will be able to get you up and running.

Norfolk’s Police and Crime Commissioner has launched his public consultation into the proposed budget for policing for 2024/25.

Norfolk residents are being asked whether the PCC should increase the police precept of council tax for the coming year.

The PCC has a statutory duty to set the police budget and, with this responsibility, make the decision on how much residents of Norfolk should pay towards the policing element of their council tax.

PCC Giles Orpen-Smellie will be engaging with the public over a twelve-week consultation period that will run until 5pm, Friday 24 November.

More information and the consultation survey can be found here.

Flourishing Families

Just One Norfolk's Flourishing Families has been designed for families who might want a little extra help meeting their child’s needs. We know that parenting can sometimes feel overwhelming, but we all share the common goal to give children the best start in life.

The website has all sorts of things that you can get help with, whether it’s healthy eating, fun activities or financial support, and this tool was developed to help you work out what you’re already doing well and help you find support when and if you need it.
