Welcome back!

We hope you enjoyed the Summer break and are ready for a busy, exciting and fun-packed year! All the children have made a fantastic start to Year 4 and we are looking forward to the term ahead.  We are now called Ranworth.

Through our newsletter we will share important information to start the year off and then to communicate at different points throughout the term. As always, please get in touch with either one of us if you have any questions.

Meet Our Team...

Mrs Pearce - 4P class teacher

Mrs Clark - Teaching assistant  (not Tuesdays)

Mrs Magee - Teaching assistant (Tuesdays)

Mrs Blazer - PPA teacher

Home School Journals

These are checked on a Monday. Please record any reading in the book and read as often as possible. If you need to communicate with us please ask child to hand journal to one of us, so we don't miss anything,

We are always on the door morning and afternoon if you want to catch us, otherwise the journal is a good way of getting a message to us.

Marvellous Me

The app is a great way to keep up to date with your child's learning. We will share photos and their achievements and will also use this for messages. You should have a letter on the first day. Please ask if you have any problems or need another letter.

Due to a technical issue, if you already have a Marvellous Me account you may need to create a new one this year. Apologies for any inconvenience.

Here are links to a parent walk through guide and a 'parent app explained' video with some useful information about how to get started.

Please let one of the Year 5 team know if you are having any problems.

Homework Please support your child in completing their homework as it is invaluable in consolidating their learning inside the classroom. Every week, your child will be expected to complete Maths, Literacy or a History/Geography piece of work as well as learning their spellings. We also encourage daily reading and, as mentioned, for this to be recorded in the home/school journals. Children who record three reading sessions a week will gain one house point, children who record five reading sessions a week will be awarded two house points!

Homework will be given on a Thursday and due in the following Tuesday. Children will be given a ‘Times Table Rockstars’, ‘Numbots’, ‘Stick and Split’, and mymaths login details to practise Maths skills online at home too.

Our Autumn Curriculum

Literacy - we begin with a unit on the myth of 'Troy' for three weeks followed by a longer unit based on 'Noah Barley Water Runs Away' by John Boyne.

Maths - we will begin our work this term focusing on place value, this will be shortly followed by some assessments to gain a better understanding of both the children's strengths, as well as where support is needed. After this we will be looking at the formal methods of calculation for the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division).

Science - we will be looking at teeth and the digestion system as well as sound and how it travels.  As well as this we will be investigating how our teeth can decay...we are hoping for a visit from a dental nurse!

History - we are starting off our history by looking at the Ancient Greeks, our Big Question is, 'What are we thankful to the Ancient Greeks for today?' We are also hoping to have an Ancient Greek day later on in the term - keep a look-out for more details on this.

Geography - in our first Geography unit we travel the world to learn about different languages and where our food comes from.

R.W.E - in Religious and Worldviews Education we cover two topics in year 4, alternating between Buddhism and Christianity for the entirety of the year.

Art - we  will explore the exciting and imaginative work of Salvador Dali and then we wil be exploring plastics in DT

PE - we will be covering three main activities in the Autumn term: tennis, fitness and gymnastics. Each class will have two lessons a week and will look to build on skills taught and learnt from Year 3.

Computing - Internet Safety is so important, especially with social media and online gaming being so popular. We teach the children how to remain safe online, and how to use the Internet appropriately for their age group.

Music - we start off with Ukelele  and will also be exposing the children to a wide variety of musical genres, heritage and movements. Lots of singing and performing too, of course!  Our first topic is linked ot Ancient Greece.

French -  the children will learn how to greet each other and how to pronounce and talk about their likes, dislikes, food and the weather.  We will celebrate European Languages Day 26th September 2023

More information on our curriculum can be found on the school website.

Naming items...

Please can all personal items be named wherever possible. Coats, school jumpers and stationary all go missing throughout the year and it is so much easier to find if it is named. Thank you.

Multiplication Tables Check

This year, all Year 4 children throughout the country will do a timetables check which is a computer based timed test. The test consists of 25 questions with a six second time limit for each. We will do lots of practise in school, but it is very important to support this with extra practise at home as this really helps children to secure their learning. The golden number is 21 minutes a week on  TT rockstars a week to achieve this.

We will send home more information about the Multiplication Tables Check nearer the time.

Are you Communicating Effectively? | Spinnaker

We are all excited about the year ahead. We are hoping to do a few trips and will let you know as soon as possible with any details.

We will do all we can to communicate with you as much as possible, please feel free to do the same with us. We are always about in the mornings on the doors, and again after school if you would like to chat to us. Alternatively, you can write in your child's journal and we will respond in there too.

We look forward to building positive relationships with you all, and look forward to meeting you all in person in the coming weeks.
