Friday 30th September, 2022

Thank you to those who were able to join us this morning for the Macmillan coffee morning and the Friends' AGM. We hope to have a few more coffee mornings over the school year, and we will try and vary the days of the week that we hold them on.

Yesterday it was lovely to see so many family members joining the Year 3 children to read with them and to see how Accelerated Reader works. We enjoyed inviting you into school, and we look forward to having parents in school many more times over the school year.

We are making a few changes to lunchtime next week to enable the whole school to have a longer morning and a shorter afternoon. We are going back to our pre-covid timings with lunchtime starting at 12:30pm for all children and ending at 1:25pm.

It always seems odd during September to be walking around school and seeing Christmas cards designs being created. Unfortunately, we do have to do them early to ensure any purchased cards are back before Christmas! Your child's design should be coming home very soon for you to view.

Have a good weekend - October already!

Kind regards

Matt Walton

Headteacher

School Improvement

Every year we set some targets for the school to work on to support continued improvement. The headlines are always posted on the school website. Take a look at our headline priorities here: SJS SIDP

Mrs Scott

We told the children yesterday that we were very sad that Mrs Scott (Year 5 teaching assistant) is leaving us today and moving on to pastures new outside of education.  Mrs Scott has been at the school for 10 years and I know she has thoroughly enjoyed being part of the school community. She will be missed by staff and pupils. We wish her all the best for the future!

Well done to:

Reading is Magic

All week we have been celebrating books of all kinds as part of the Reading is Magic Festival.

Can Caravan by Richard O’Neill

We started the week by joining other schools from across the country in watching Richard O’Neill explain the inspiration for his book ‘Can Caravan’. We then got to listen to him read the book to us.

“The man was drinking from a can and then turned it sideways. He thought it looked a bit like a caravan, so made up a story about a can caravan.” Wanye (Year 3)

“He saw a truck with a large aluminium shape on the back. He saw a sign on the enormous silvery blob that said the aluminium ingot was made from 1.5 million cans.” Theo (Year 5)

“I liked the book Can Caravan because it was creative and the author used his imagination.” Libby (Year 5)

Magic Reading Challenge

Everyone has been taking part in Mrs Wills’ Magic Reading Challenge this week. There are a number of different challenges which allows children to explore a wide range of books. Some of which they wouldn’t normally read which is fantastic!

“Normally when you pick a book you don’t know which books to choose. The magic reading challenge was great because it gave me loads of different suggestions of new books to read.” Gioia (Year 4)

“Emily Garrett’s book ‘Too much stuff’ is based on magpies. We got to make our very own magpies. I really liked making them and finding out more about magpies.” Livia (Year 4)

“I liked the reading challenge because you get to read different books and find out about more. The magpies were great and I really enjoyed the book ‘Too much stuff’ because in my bedroom I’ve got too much stuff!” Sonny (Year 4)

“I enjoyed reading some new books this week and really enjoyed them. A scary one and a funny one – there were lots of different ones to read. The reading challenge helped me chose some new books. I enjoyed the pictures in the books can caravan.” Andrei (y6)

Maths Champions

This week the Maths Champions and Mr Arthur met to chat about the exciting plans for maths across the school. They are getting ready for the first parent drop in sessions of the year next Thursday (6th Oct) at 9-10am and 2-3pm. You can just drop in at either time and hear about how we teach maths across the school. The Maths Champions will be on hand to help answer questions and give advice.

This year's Maths Champions are: Isaac, Rhea, Olivia, Kian, Ayva, Zuza, Wade, Jack and Olly. Here's what they're looking forward to about being a Maths Champions...

"I'm looking forward to helping others not be scared of maths." Kian

"I want to help others improve and enjoy maths." Isaac

"I want to help people when they get stuck and help them get better at their tests." Zuza

"I want to help people with lots of different kinds of maths." Rhea

Watch this space for some of their exciting plans.

Marvellous Me

After half-term, we will be using the 'Marvellous Me' app to help parents & carers keep in touch with some of the things going on in the classroom. The app is an area where the staff members can post pictures from the weekly learning the children are doing, to help you keep in touch with what is going on. We hope to get the children involved in posting pictures too.  The class teacher will also be able to post class messages on the app as well as send stickers to express how well a child may be doing. Please look out for a letter next week.
