Kit

A reminder that our uniform policy for PE kit is a plain white or navy t-shirt and navy or black shorts/jogging bottoms. School jumpers can be worn. We are also suggesting that children who wear earrings do not wear them on PE days and for hair to be tied up.

Healthy snacks

We encourage all children to have a healthy snack at break time every day.

Home/School Journal: Home school journals are a valuable means of communication between home and school. We expect the children to have their diaries with them in class every day. One of the Year 4 team will check journals on a Monday to sign and make comments where appropriate. Please sign the journals over the weekend to show that you have seen them and to help us to maintain regular contact. Also, please use this to record any reading your child has completed with you or guided by an adult. Remember, it is always good to talk about reading with your child whenever you get a chance to!

Homework: Please support your child in completing their homework as it is invaluable in consolidating their learning inside the classroom. Every week, your child will be expected to complete Maths, Literacy or a History/Geography piece of work as well as learning their spellings. We also encourage daily reading and, as mentioned, for this to be recorded in the home/school journals. Children who record three reading sessions a week will gain one house point, children who record five reading sessions a week will be awarded two house points!

Homework will be given on a Thursday and due in the following Tuesday. Children will be given a ‘Times Table Rockstars’, ‘Numbots’, ‘Stick and Split’, ‘Sumdog’ and mymaths login details to practise Maths skills online at home too.

Our Autumn Curriculum

Literacy - we begin with a unit on the myth of 'Troy' for three weeks followed by a longer unit based on 'Noah Barley Water Runs Away' by John Boyne.

Maths - we will begin our work this term focusing on place value, this will be shortly followed by some assessments to gain a better understanding of both the childrens' strengths as well as where support is needed. After this we will be looking at the formal methods of calculation for the four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division).

Science - we will be looking at teeth and the digestion system as well as sound and how it travels.  As well as this we will be investigating how our teeth can decay...we are hoping for a visit from a dental nurse!

History - we are starting off our history by looking at the Ancient Greeks, our Big Question is, 'What are we thankful to the Ancient Greeks for today?' We are also hoping to have an Ancient Greek day later on in the term - keep a look-out for more details on this.

Geography - in our first Geography unit we travel the world to learn about different languages and where our food comes from.

R.W.E - in Religious and Worldviews Education we cover two topics in year 5, alternating between Buddhism and Christianity for the entirety of the year.

Art - we explore the exciting and imaginative work of Britto and Salvador Dali to begin with!

PE - we will be covering three main activities in the Autumn term: tennis, fitness and gymnastics. Each class will have two lessons a week and will look to build on skills taught and learnt from Year 3. So far, the children have shown some fantastic tennis skills!

Computing - Internet Safety is so important, especially with social media and online gaming being so popular. We teach the children how to remain safe online, and how to use the Internet appropriately for their age group.

Music - our new music scheme 'Music Express' is set to give us far greater coverage of the music curriculum, exposing the children to a wide variety of musical genres, heritage and movements. Lots of singing and performing too, of course!

French - Mrs Pearce will teach the children how to greet each other and how to pronounce and talk about their likes, dislikes, food and the weather.

More information on our curriculum can be found on the school website.

Naming items...

Please can all personal items be named wherever possible. Coats, school jumpers and stationary all go missing throughout the year and it is so much easier to find if it is named. Thank you.

Multiplication Tables Check

This year, all Year 4 children throughout the country will do a timetables check which is a computer based timed test. The test consists of 25 questions with a six second time limit for each. We will do lots of practise in school, but it is very important to support this with extra practise at home as this really helps children to secure their learning.

Are you Communicating Effectively? | Spinnaker

We are all excited about the year ahead. We are hoping to do a few trips and will let you know as soon as possible with any details.  We will do all we can to communicate with you as much as possible, please feel free to do the same with us. We are always about in the mornings on the doors, and again after school if you would like to chat to us. Alternatively, you can write in your child's journal and we will respond in there too.

We look forward to building positive relationships with you all, and look forward to meeting you all in person in the coming weeks.
