Summer 2026


We hope you had a lovely Easter break. We have had such a fantastic first two terms in Year 5. We are confident that the children will continue to do themselves proud. We have a lot of exciting, interesting and varied activities to look forward to in our Summer term.


Curriculum Overview

Summer

Literacy: This half-term we will be focusing an Francesca Sanna's 'The Journey' which will invite our children to use their imaginations and explore how life can be for a refugee. This will be followed with a unit of work based on Shakespeare's Macbeth.

Maths – We will start the new term by reviewing multiplication and division before moving to shape. For the rest of the year, we will be looking at decimals, negative numbers, converting units and volume.

Science – During this term we will be exploring animals including humans. This will look at the human life cycle, focusing on each stage of life. Then we will  move on to the  'Journey of life'. We will be finding out about plant reproduction, the life cycle of amphibians and insects and how to classify animals by looking at their distinguishing features.

History/Geography – We have finished our learning about the Saxons and Vikings and will now move onto a geography unit on Mexico. After this, we will finish the year with a deeper dive into the history of the Mayans.

Art/DT - This term we will be doing an exciting food technology unit which will have us visiting the kitchen lots to create traditional Mexican recipes. This will be followed by creating a Bayeux tapestry unit in art.

PE – PE will continue with both classes having PE on Wednesdays and Fridays. Lily class will have their final swimming lessons then return to Wednesday PE.  This term the PE focus will be on athletics as we gear up for the NPSA City Sports in June. We will also be taking part in cricket and outdoor adventurous activities (OAA). Please ensure your child has the correct and appropriate clothing for these sessions.


Year 5 – Sports event

Year 5 have been invited to take part in the Y10 sport studies leaders assessment day again this year at Sprowston Community Academy. The children will be taking part in sessions organised by the Y10s throughout the day. These will include activities like football, basketball, cricket etc.

We will be going on Wed 17th June. It is during school time so we will be back by 3:15pm.

Home reading

Please encourage your children to read as often as possible at home. Just 15 to 20 minutes a day will result in huge benefits for your child. Please record any home reading in their journals and rewards will be given to those making the extra effort. There is an extensive range of reading resources and suggestions available on our school website.


Diary Dates – St. Cuthbert's Primary School

Tuesday 28th April - Police visit to discuss behaviour expectations in the local community, the legal age of criminal responsibility and the local Police's role in our community.

Wednesday 17th June - Sports event at SCA (All Day)

Week beginning Monday 22nd June - City Sports Week
