Happy New Year 2026 ? Elegant & Heartfelt Wishes for a Bright Beginning

Welcome back!

We hope you had a peaceful Christmas break and are looking forward to a new term in Year 6.

The children worked incredibly hard last term, and we were really pleased with their attitude and how they have been helping staff and other children around school. We hope you are all refreshed and ready for the busy term ahead.

In the Autumn term, the children showed themselves to be great role models around school and settled quickly into their new roles, e.g. House Captain, librarian, Pupil Ambassador. They demonstrated great attitudes towards their learning, and we are confident this will continue in the coming weeks. As a result, we were able to go on a number of trips e.g. Kentwell Hall, Pizza Express, Crucial Crew and High School. We have more exciting things to look forward to in the coming months,

In DT, the children enjoyed building and racing their own motorised train. At times, the children had to show great resilience and maturity to get their trains moving, which they all did. We raced them in the hall, which was great fun. In Art this term we will be looking at the artist Kandinsky and developing our own art in his style. In Science, we launched our STEM racing project which has been a fantastic success; the children will be representing the school in January with their creations.

At the end of the term, it was wonderful to finish off with a very joyful Christmas Carol Service at St Cuthberts Church and the Christmas show. Lots of children also participated in interschool sporting competitions, including football and cross-country.

In the spring term, we will be looking to build on last term’s successes.

Our Spring Curriculum:

Literacy: We will continue studying Darren Shan's Crique Du Freak, which the children have been enjoying hugely. We will then move on to Romeo and Juliet, which I am sure they will enjoy.

Maths: We have started with the new topic of ratios, which they have enjoyed. We will also revisit our understanding of the four main operations before moving on to algebra, decimals, percentages and statistics. In the coming weeks, we will also be starting maths catch-up sessions after school. Invites will be sent out in the next two weeks.

Science: In Science, we will be finalising preparations for the STEM Racing Regional finals competition later this month. After that we will be turning our attention to electricity, where we will learn about key discoveries, build and test circuits, and carry out fair investigations to record and explain findings.

History: We will be moving on to WW2, if your family has any stories to share about WW2 then we would love to hear them.

Music: This term we will continue to benefit from our Musician in Residence, Mrs Smith, who will be doing Samba and the roots of African carnival.

PE: In PE we will be looking at handball before moving on to football and tennis when the weather gets a little warmer.

More info on our curriculum can be found on the school website.

Homework

To help prepare for SATs, every child has already been given revision books, which will form the basis of homework. In addition to this, we will be encouraging the children to read regularly at home and asking them about what texts they enjoy most. Please support your child in completing their homework and talk about their reading, as it is invaluable in consolidating their learning inside the classroom.

Home School Journal

We expect the children to have their journals with them in class every day. Please can you sign the diaries and make sure the children are completing their reading records.

Weekly Routines

Please make sure that your child comes to school fully prepared with the right equipment every day. We expect every child to come to school with their own blue handwriting pen (not a biro), pencil and glue stick, as this is something that will be expected at high school. Other stationery such as crayons, felt-tips, rubbers and rulers would be useful too.

PE is on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Children should wear plain white t-shirts and black shorts or jogging bottoms (find further details in their diaries). Long hair needs to be tied back and earrings need to be removed.

SATs Information

SATs week will be taking place on the week commencing Monday 11th May 2026. Your child needs to be in school this week, so please do not book any holidays.

Over the coming weeks, we will be starting extra reading and maths groups to support pupils in the lead up to SATs.  We will also be holding a SATS parents session in the coming months to answer any questions you may have. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any queries or concerns in the meantime.

This term we will be holding a SATs Café filled with lots of information, tips and tricks to help navigate this year's SATs in May.

More information to follow.
