Dear Parents & Carers

As we approach the end of this rather short half term, I find myself reflecting on the achievements and experiences our pupils have enjoyed over the past few weeks. The energy and enthusiasm shown has been great to see and I've enjoyed seeing many of the children's achievements.

Our Year 6 pupils have truly shone this week as they tackled their SATs tests. Their concentration and effort has been very impressive. The most important thing is that they have given the assessments their very best effort. I certainly saw evidence of this daily this week. They can now look forward to a half term of exciting events to finish their time at junior school.

Meanwhile, our Year 5 pupils have been broadening their horizons with two exciting excursions. They participated in a stimulating STEM Discovery day at Norwich High School for Girls, where they had the opportunity to explore and engage with various aspects of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Additionally, on 2 May, they embarked on a wonderful journey to London, immersing themselves in the vibrant atmosphere of a Carnival at the Southbank Centre. Please read more about their adventures below.

Last week, we commemorated the 80th anniversary of VE Day with meaningful celebrations. The children enjoyed the day and finding out a little more about this historical occasion.

As we enter the final week before the Whitsun break, we can look ahead to some wonderful trips and events in the last half term to finish off the year.

One event I'd like to highlight is the Friends' BBQ scheduled for 4 July. It promises to be another great late afternoon/evening, and we hope you are able to come along. In preparation for this, we will be holding a non-uniform day on Friday, 13 June. We are kindly asking for donations for the tombola on this day.

As always, I am proud of the achievements of the children this half-term and look forward to a strong finish to the summer term.

I wish you all a lovely weekend and a restful Whitsun break when it arrives.

Kind regards

Matt Walton, Headteacher

Staff Changes

We have news of a couple of staff whom are moving on at the end of term in July.

Firstly, we will be saying goodbye, or 'Adios', to Miss Watts after 8 years at Sprowston Junior. Miss Watts has decided to take a wonderful opportunity to teach abroad and will be moving to Madrid. Miss Watts has been an important member of the team since she joined us and has especially worked hard to increase arts' opportunities for all the children in the school. We are sad to see her go, but we wish her all the very best for her exciting adventure, and we look forward to finding out how she is getting on.

We will also be saying farewell to Miss Howse who has decided the time is right to move on from SJS. Miss Howse has been with us for 3 years and has become a much valued member of staff during that time. She has enjoyed being part of the SJS team, and we've all enjoyed working with her. We will certainly miss her and we wish her all the very best for the future.

Carnival trip to London for Year 5

On Friday 2nd May, Year 5 visited London's Southbank Centre to watch a performance of Camille Saint -Saens 'Carnival of the Animals'.

From the virtuosic flight of the flute to the demon speed of the pianists, from the floor-shaking footsteps of the double bass to the soft glides of the cello, the dazzling carnival parade is infused with movement, design, lighting and new text by Kate Wakeling. (source: www.southbankcentre.co.uk).

Not only did Salhouse enjoy the performance, they got to take in some of the sights on the Southbank as well as fitting in a trip to the fantastic play park in the shadow of the London Eye.

Here’s what some of the children thought:

“I really liked being able to see all the sights of London as well as getting to play on the park.” Wanyé

“I liked the way they made the instruments move and used silhouettes to make it look like animation,” Toby.

“I liked the way that all the instruments were trapped in a dungeon, but then escaped,” Ben B

A big thank you to Miss Watts & Genevieve from Into Opera for organising the trip.

Year 3/4 Martham

In Martham, Year 3/4 were building Hadrian's Wall last week. They were finding out all about the wall as part of their history work on the 'Romans'. Hadrian’s Wall was built to guard the wild north-west frontier of the Roman Empire.

 Year 5's Stem Discovery Day

Salhouse spent yesterday at Norwich High School for Girls this week for their STEM Discovery Day. The children got to take part in science, technology, engineering and maths workshops throughout the day. From mixing solutions in chemistry, to making cars in physics - the day had it all. They even got to hold some exotic creatures - the favourite was the bearded dragon.

Here are some thoughts from the children:

"I liked having a tour of the school and being able to do different activities like being a solution detective in chemistry," Bia.

"My favourite thing was petting a bearded dragon because I've never held one before," Elliott.

"I really enjoyed making the cars in physics, it was really good fun," Lewis.

A big thank you to Norwich High School for Girls for hosting the STEM Discovery day and for providing transport to and from the event.

Bayeux Tapestry

Salhouse have been inspired by the Bayeux Tapestry and have been busy in DT creating tapestries of their own.

Here’s what the children enjoyed about making them:

“I didn’t think I could sew, but I tried really hard and really liked it in the end,” George.

“I liked that we were all given our own unique materials,” Zariya.

“I learnt lots of new techniques,” Kenadee.

Events | Norwich Games Festival

Norwich Games Festival has a range of interesting events at half-term. Please take a look.

Wrap-around Care

Just a quick update regarding wrap-around care. Unfortunately, there will not be any in place before the summer, but we are looking at our options for September and hope to have some news later in the term. If you have any queries regarding this, please speak to the school office and somebody will get back to you.

Year 6

Year 6 had a busy week doing their Year 6 SATs. They took it all in their stride and whilst there were a few nerves before we began, many actually enjoyed the structure and challenge as the week progressed. After the last test, they had a fun afternoon and a pic-nic outside!
