Friday 22nd November

Dear Parents & Carers

I think everyone deserves a weekend in the warm after such a cold week! I'm sure the school pick up and drop off hasn't been the easiest this week but it looks like next week will be slightly better.

We've enjoyed some lovely activities in school this week, such as the Year 3/4 Ancient Greek Day. The children immersed themselves in the different activities and really enjoyed them. The day takes an enormous amount of effort to organise so a big thank you to the teaching team and to the parents/carers who came along to help out.

A big thank you to everyone for supporting Children In Need and the Bingo Disco last Friday.  It was a lovely day and plenty of money was raised by both events.

All our Christmas events are now on the calendar and emails have been sent out today regarding the theatre trip and Christmas performance. We are looking forward to a busy and exciting end to the autumn term.

Our collection for the food bank keeps growing, and we appreciate all the donations so far. The last day for donations is Tuesday 3rd December.

Have a lovely weekend.

Kind regards

Matt Walton, Headteacher

Children In Need

We enjoyed a fabulous Children In Need day last week and we would like to say thank you to all of the school community for working together to raise £300 for the charity. The Year 6 House Captains and School Council members put on some enjoyable games for the children at lunch time. These included 'name the teddy' and 'hoop throwing' as well as 'pin the spot' on Pudsey.

A big thank you, as ever, to Mrs Blazer for baking yummy cookies!

Ancient Greek Day - Year 3/4

The Year 3 & 4 children had a busy and exciting day this week. The children really enjoyed the different activities available and really immersed themselves in the experience.

'Ancient Greek Day was amazing because we all dressed up and did lots of activities such as mosaics, Greek writing and water colours. Our favourites were pinch pots and pendants.'

'We also enjoyed the feast because there were grapes, cheese and bread.'

By Alper & Alexa - Year 4

We will have pictures of the day in the next newsletter.

Year 3/4 Gymnastics

This term Year 3/4 have been doing gymnastics in PE. The focus has been creating a balance either by themselves or with others. They have had fun experimenting with different poses and balances. Here are some pictures of what they've been up to.

Year 5 trip to the Norwich Central Mosque

Last week, Year 5 visited the Norwich Central Mosque on Dereham Road. They were welcomed by the Imam who showed them round and talked to them about how the Mosque is used.

The Imam told the children about the Five Pillars of Islam and gave examples of how people in Norwich and around the world follow them. He explained how to read the Quran and showed them what the start of a prayer session looked like. As you would expect, Salhouse had some great questions for the Imam. Here are some of the facts they discovered during their visit:

"You need to wash your arms, hands, face, nose and feet before prayer," Aiden.

"Every step of the Wudu has to be done three times," Elliott.

"Ramadan is when you fast and only eat on sunrise and sundown," Bia.

"When you go to Mecca for Hajj you walk round the Kaaba seven times," Ben.

Year 5 Reading Cafe - Thursday 28th Nov (2-3pm)

Year 5's reading café is on Thursday next week (2-3pm) and all parents/carers of children in Salhouse are welcome to join them to find out what they have been up to. There will be extracts from the book they are studying in Literacy as well as a number of polar-themed activities to get involved with.

Children from Salhouse are encouraged to come to school dressed as polar explorers on Thursday - bringing in hats, gloves and scarves. If you are coming to the reading café, you are more than welcome to join them and come wrapped up for their polar adventures.

Royal Shakespeare Company Training

On Thursday 14th November, our year 6 Arts Ambassadors attended a training day with the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) at Norwich Theatre Royal. This is the very first time the RSC has hosted a training day for children in Norfolk and our children were an absolute credit to the school. The RSC Shakespeare ambassador programme is focused not only on Shakespeare himself but on building children’s confidence in their own leadership and communication skills. As part of their training, SJS's Shakespeare Ambassadors will be hosting some exciting activities across the school in the coming few months, details of which will follow shortly.

On the 17th November, Gioia, Amber, Scarlett, Eliza, Lydia, Sophia and I went with Miss Watts to the Theatre Royal. We met our teachers for the day and got into a circle and told everyone an emoji that we were feeling. I did a happy emoji which was similar to other people's. Then we started learning about a Shakespeare play we'd never heard of before, it was called Mid-Summer Nights Dream. At the end, we were given some free stuff to show we were now Shakespeare Ambassadors!  Ada - Year 6

Go Go Safari arrives!

This morning, the Pupil Ambassadors went to meet a new member of our school. Introducing our very own 'Mini G'! We will be, once again, joining lots of other schools and community groups in decorating our mini giraffe who will go on display as part of the Break Go Go Safari trail in the summer next year. They even got to meet some of the larger animals that will be making up the Go Go Safari.

Click here for more information about the Go Go Safari trail.

The Pupil Ambassadors will be launching a competition in school on Monday to come up with an exciting, imaginative and fun design for our giraffe. Your child will been given a Mini G template to decorate. All entries need to be handed in by Friday 13th December - this can be to your child's class teacher or one of the Pupil Ambassadors.

Thanks to the Friends of Sprowston Junior for their support with this exciting project.

Disco Bingo

It was great to see so many people at last week's 'Friends Disco Bingo' event. This was a new event and our thanks to all the families that were able to come along and support it. Many lovely prizes were won over the evening. Our thanks, as ever, to the 'friends of school' for all their time and effort in putting on a lovely evening for everyone.

Norwich Foodbank's Christmas Appeal 2024

After the amazing success of last year’s collection for the Norwich Foodbank’s Christmas appeal, our Pupil Ambassadors have decided to help out again and will be organising a collection for this year's Norwich Foodbank’s Christmas Collection.

We know that things are tough for many at the moment, but if you feel you can help by donating anything towards this appeal, it would be much appreciated.

The Foodbank is really short of the items highlighted on the poster below, but any donations are welcome.

Please bring in any items to either the school office or to your child’s classroom by Tuesday 3rd December. Our School Pupil Ambassadors will be delivering our donations to the Norwich Foodbank on Wednesday 4th December.

If you have any questions, or would like more information, please speak to one of our amazing Pupil Ambassadors or Mr Arthur.

Maths Champions Autumn Challenge

You've still got time to submit your answers to our Maths Champions Autumn challenge and help Mr Bird with his tree planting dilemma.

You can jot down your answers on a piece of paper or email them to Mr Arthur. Prizes will be handed out in the final assembly of the term.
