Friday 8th November,  2024

Dear Parents & Carers

We've celebrated a lot of good sporting effort in assembly today - please have a read about the different events below.

You'll also find news about an exciting trip to the Puppet theatre in December. This has come about through our continued work to enrich the curriculum with arts opportunities; this is supported by money grants which Miss Watts has successfully acquired. We've had many lovely visits and events for the arts in the past couple of years and look forward to the theatre trip and the different opportunities in the wider curriculum. One of which is coming soon; a group of Year 6 children are attending a workshop at the Theatre Royal as part of the Royal Shakespeare Company School's programme.

Next Friday is Children In Need, and you'll find information about a non-uniform day below. We are encouraging yellow and/or spotty clothes if you have them. If not, any non-uniform will be fine.

The 'Friends of School' have organised a Disco Bingo on Friday evening. Please do come along and support the event if you are able to. They have also organised a Christmas disco for Thursday 19th December, as well as two Christmas shops. Please see the dates below.

We continue to have a good relationship with the Norwich Foodbank and it is wonderful that the Pupil Ambassadors are organising a collection for the Christmas Appeal. I'm sure, like last year, we can collect a fantastic amount to take to the foodbank in December.

Early next week, Miss Clark will be sending out details of a Dyslexia workshop we are hosting on Thursday 21st November. Please look out for the email if you are interested.

Finally, just a reminder about parents' evening next week. We look forward to seeing everyone and discussing how the children have settled so far and how they are progressing in their work.

Have a lovely weekend.

Kind regards

Matt Walton, Headteacher

Puppet Theatre Trips!

We're delighted to announce that we will be taking all of the school to the Puppet Theatre to see 'Sleeping Beauty' in December. The opportunity has arisen through our ongoing Arts' project led by Miss Watts. The project will be covering the cost of the visit which is fantastic news. We will be asking for a contribution towards the cost of transport and more information will be sent out in due course.

For dates - please see above

Children In Need

Once again, we are fund-raising for Children In Need next Friday and have a number if items in the office to purchase such as pens and ?

We will be having a non uniform day and we are encouraging yellow and/or spotty clothes but other non uniform is fine if the children do not have these. We will be asking for a voluntary contribution of £1 towards the charity.

Our House Captains will be running some activities at lunch time and we hope to have biscuits on sale at break time too. The children will need some spare change - a reminder will be sent later next week.

Girls' Football

A huge well done to all the girls who took part in the girls’ football tournament on Monday this week. For many of the girls it was their first ever competitive match, they all gave 100% and played with great spirit. Well done!

The girls were in action again this week facing Firside in a cup match. Again, the girls showed amazing effort and determination in the game! The match itself ended 2-2 with goals from Carissa and Eliza, there will be a rematch to decide who goes through to the next round. This will be in the Spring term.

School Sports Partnership cross-country qualifying event

Selected children from every year group took part in the Norwich East Sports partnership cross-country competition this week. We felt very proud not only for the effort the children put in but also the support they showed to each other during their races. We also had many children qualify for the county finals - Freddie, Courtney, Wayne, Theo, Jacob, Eliza and Ethan. Again, well done to everyone for all their effort, they all represented Sprowston Junior School amazingly!

Salhouse Brain Buddies!

This week Salhouse were visited by two Educational Mental Health Practitioners (EMHPs) who work within schools as part of the new Mental Health Support Teams (MHSTs). Mel and Beth were launching the new and exciting initiative 'Brain Buddies'.

Brain Buddies aims to develop students’ understanding of what emotion regulation is by understanding, identifying and developing strategies for regulating their emotions. This is not a therapeutic or ‘treatment’ group. It draws upon evidence based practices that support the development of emotion regulation in young people and are consistent with therapeutic approaches. (source: NHS Brain Buddies Emotion Regulation Group flyer).

Salhouse will be taking part in 9 sessions with Mel and Beth over the next few weeks. We are all really excited to be involved with this new project.

Norwich Foodbank's Christmas Appeal 2024

After the amazing success of last year’s collection for the Norwich Foodbank’s Christmas appeal, our Pupil Ambassadors have decided to help out again and will be organising a collection for this year's Norwich Foodbank’s Christmas Collection.

We know that things are tough for many at the moment, but if you feel you can help by donating anything towards this appeal, it would be much appreciated.

The Foodbank is really short of the items highlighted on the poster below, but any donations are welcome.

Please bring in any items to either the school office or to your child’s classroom by Tuesday 3rd December. Our School Pupil Ambassadors will be delivering our donations to the Norwich Foodbank on Wednesday 4th December.

If you have any questions, or would like more information, please speak to one of our amazing Pupil Ambassadors or Mr Arthur.

Missing running vests

We have counted up all of our school running vests and have discovered there are several missing. If you could have a look at home and return any that you come across, that would be really helpful.

Here's a picture of them, as modelled by last year's cross-country team.

Thanks for all your help.

Disco Bingo!

Just a little reminder of our Disco Bingo.

Friday 15th November 6pm entry eyes down 6:30pm, finishes 8pm.

Come and join the Friends of Sprowston Junior School for an evening of Family Disco Crazy Bingo!

For those of you who do not know, disco crazy bingo is bingo with weird, whacky, and wonderful prizes, along with disco music and maybe a dance off or 2!

Everyone is welcome, so bring all your family and friends. All children attending must have an adult with them.

There will be some amazing prizes to be won and the further on we get with the games the bigger the prizes are! The night will include 5 games of bingo, 2 prizes per game.

The cost is £5 per person, and this includes your bingo books for all games.

Booking and payment will need to be made on the school payment system.

You’re welcome to bring in your own drinks, but there will be a tuck shop available for nibbles and sweets (card or cash on the night).

Please come along and support the Friends of Sprowston Junior School to raise funds for the school!

At night, make it bright!

Now that the clocks have gone back, and it is getting darker at the end of the school day, it is a good time to think about how everyone can stay safe when travelling home from school.

Here are some links with top tips on how everyone can avoid additional risks that travelling home in the dark may bring.

Understanding gangs and county lines for parents and carers in Norfolk

St Giles, on behalf of the Norfolk Safeguarding Children Partnership, is running an awareness-raising session for parents and carers on Gangs and County Lines. Its aim is to help parents and carers recognise the signs and indicators that young people are at risk of becoming involved in gangs, exploitation and violence, as well as advice on how to have conversations about these issues and where to seek support.

The online event will be on Thursday 14 November 2024, 10:00-11:30am.

Click here for more information on the event and to book a place on the webinar.
