Dear Parents & Carers

Now we are well into the new term, it has good to reflect back this week on how things are going. The Year 3/4 classes are working well and the children are supporting each other with day to day life in school and with their learning. We hope the Year 3 children now feel very much apart of the school and are enjoying the curriculum. We've also had a really positive start in Year 5 & 6 too.

The school value we are spotting across the school at the moment is 'positivity' and we have seen many examples to share in assembly. Today children were nominated for encouraging partners, and for their attitude towards their learning and school as a whole. Well done to all!

Last week the children enjoyed coming off the timetable and celebrating the Day of Languages, looking at French speaking countries from across the world. You can read more about the day below. Mrs Pearce is our languages lead teacher and she enjoyed visiting the classrooms to find out what all the children had been up to.

In the dates section, you will see the first parents' evenings of the year. Please look out for the email to sign up for them shortly.

A big well done to the football team last night for their second win of the season - a 7-1 win against Falcon B team. You can find out about the first game of the season below. Unfortunately, our girls' team didn't get to play their cup match this week due to the horrible weather, but we look forward to seeing how they get on when the game is replayed.

Have a lovely weekend.

Kind regards

Matt Walton, Headteacher

European Day of Languages 26th September

We have a lovely day celebrating languages and French, which we currently study at Sprowston Junior. All the children enjoyed time in class celebrating their own languages and also creating some amazing work while learning about different French-speaking countries around the world.

Year 5 enjoyed eating croissants and learning about Benin. Year 6 baked Swiss bread and learnt lots of facts about Switzerland. Year 3 and 4 created some amazing artwork and fact files about Quebec in Canada.

We are really looking forward to our International day where we celebrate our diversity and inclusivity. On Wednesday 13th November - if you are interested in sharing anything about your culture, please contact Mrs Pearce epearce@sprowstonjunior.uk

It was a really lovely event last year and hope to meet as many of our new international parents as possible. It was great to learn from families about their own countries, customs, languages and food. More details to follow.

Year 6

Hickling class enjoyed a fun and exciting science activity this week. We had to order living things for how old they were on a 10 metre timeline. Children were put into groups of 3 to 4 and we got 8 living pictures to put on the timeline. One metre along the line was equal to 50 million years ago. We had a lot of fun and got most of them correct - it was a good learning experience.

Reading Help

If you are interested in supporting the school with reading and have a couple of hours free during the week, please let us know! We would like to have some more parent readers to come in and support the children. If you are interested, please contact the school office or speak to Mr Walton or Mr Arthur.

Mr Reeds and Ivy's Epilepsy assemblies

This week Mr Reeds and Ivy held assemblies about epilepsy for children from all-year groups. They spent time explaining how epilepsy affects people, what we can do to help if we see someone having a seizure and how people with epilepsy can still have as much fun as everyone else.

It was really interesting to hear about the experiences that Mr Reeds and Ivy have had with epilepsy. At the end of each assembly, there was a Q&A where there was an opportunity for the children in the 'audience' to ask questions. There were some fantastic questions and discussions about how we as a school can all help each other.

A big thank you to Mr Reeds and Ivy for putting on these assemblies.

For more information, have a look at the Epilepsy Action website.

Sprowston Junior v Horsford

The Year 6 football team had a fantastic start to their season with a 2-1 win over Horsford in the first round of the cup. Super goals from Julian and Wanye helped secure the win. Player of the match went to Ethan, who made some fantastic saves in goal. Well done, boys!

Friends' Association

Last week we held the AGM for the Friends' Association. Mrs Lewis (treasurer) reported that the total income for the year was over £10,000. This was an outstanding amount to raise, and our thanks go to Mrs Hartley (Chair), Mrs Lewis and Mrs Towers in particular for all their continued hard work. Thank you also to those who helped with friends' events last year and to all our parents and carers for supporting the friends' events so well over the year.

The major purchase last year was the new gym equipment in the playground. This has become a firm favourite and it is lovely seeing the children enjoy using it at playtimes. The friends also paid for our Go Go Safari Animal which we hope to take delivery of in the next few months.

We look forward to the wonderful events the friends put on again this year and I'm sure these will continue to be supported very well by our school community.
