Friday 20th September,  2024

Dear Parents & Carers

The term is picking up speed and everyone seems to have settled back nicely into the school routine. There is a lovely atmosphere in school and I'm looking forward to seeing the children's effort and improvement over the next few months.

As mentioned below, we are particularly working on children's writing in this early part of the year and I was pleased to see the care the Year 3 and 4 children were showing when I visited classrooms this week. The Year 3 children have settled brilliantly into their new routines and seem to have been with us for longer than two weeks!

Thank you to those who came along to the coffee morning this week and a thank you to the Mental Health Support Team for joining us. They have arranged a further coffee morning and workshop on November 7th.

It's been lovely seeing the children enjoying the clubs this week and I really enjoyed having a full computer club on Wednesday with super enthusiasm from all the children. We have advertised two further clubs this week, joining up again with Mini-Moons (see below). These clubs run until half term with further clubs to be advertised for after the half-term break.

Next  week we have the Macmillan Coffee morning and Friends' AGM on Friday. Please do come along for a coffee and a chat if you are able to.

Have a lovely weekend.

Kind regards

Matt Walton, Headteacher

Attendance

The Department of Education document 'Working together to improve school attendance' came into effect from August 2024. It states that 'it is essential for pupils to get the most out of their school experience, including their attainment, well-being and wider life chances.' The pupils with the highest attainment at the end of key stage 2 and key stage 4 have higher rates of attendance compared to those with the lowest attainment.

Attendance Policy Quick Guide for Parents

We expect pupils to attend school for 100% of the academic year. You can support your child to have excellent attendance by taking these steps:

  • Ensure your child arrives on time for school every day and is ready to learn. Arriving after registration is recorded as an unauthorised absence. Pupils must be in school by 8:45am to be recorded as attending and 9:15am to recorded as late.
  • Avoid taking holidays during term time.
  • If your child appears to be only slightly ill, send them in to school. We have staff who will contact you if their condition deteriorates.
  • Book any medical appointments outside of school hours. If this is unavoidable, please book for as late in the afternoon as possible and inform the school of appointments in advance.
  • Supply a copy of the appointment card or hospital letter if your child has an appointment during school hours.

As a school, we are working hard to support all our families to ensure our attendance rate improves in 2024/25. If we can help in any way with attendance worries, then please do get in contact as early as possible so we can work together to support your child. Please contact Mr Walton or Miss Clark via the school office.

Writing

We are putting more of a focus on improving the children's writing skills this term, looking closely at their handwriting, punctuation, spelling and word choices. We will be celebrating successes and improvements being made as the term develops.

How can you help at home?

Provide a place for your child to write

Ideally, this would be somewhere that is quiet and well lit. Stock the “writing centre” with supplies such as paper, pencils and crayons.

READ, READ, READ!

The best activity to improve writing is reading.  If your child reads good books, they will be a better writer. Reading exposes students to general vocabulary, word study and content-specific vocabulary.

Encourage your child to keep a reflective journal

This is excellent writing practice, as well as a good outlet for venting feelings. Encourage your child to write about things that happen at home and school. This reflective journal can be used to develop the “senses” of writing.

Provide authentic writing opportunities for your child

Have your child write their own thank-you notes, party invitations and letters to family. Let your child make the grocery list. Finding a pen pal for your child would make writing “real.” Helping children make the connection between writing and the “real” world will increase an interest in writing.

Be a writing role model

Make sure your child sees you as a writer. Point out times that you use writing to communicate with others. Discuss authentic writing in the community, such as articles and letters in the newspaper, on billboards or in written advertisements.

Start a vocabulary notebook

Teach your child new words each week and encourage her to use them. Make it into a game and give points for using the new words. Your child can keep a vocabulary notebook and get rewarded for the number of new words learnt. The words will begin to appear like magic in her oral language and writing.

When writing at home, ask questions!

Always ask your child questions when he writes. Ask specific questions about your child’s writing such as: “How did that happen?” “How did that make you feel?” “Can you tell me more about that…?” “What are some other words you could use to describe…?”

If your child creates a piece of writing outside of school that he or she is proud of, please do share it with us. Our aim is to improve the children's motivation and pride in their ideas and efforts.

Year 3/4

Year 3 & 4 were asked to create a memory box over the summer holidays and what fantastic boxes the children brought in. The children were able to show each other their wonderful boxes and to share examples of some of the lovely activities, events and places they had visited. Thank you to all for your help with these!

Year 5

Year 5 have been looking at haiku and regna poetry since we have been back at school. They have been playing with syllables, rhymes and descriptive language to help produce some wonderful short poems.

The corridor outside Salhouse looks a lot more colourful with two new displays taking shape.

In art, children have been producing some fantastic collages...

Drop in session (Wed 2nd Oct)

A reminder that Mr Arthur, Mrs Harrison and Miss Burch will be holding a drop in session on Wed 2nd Oct at 2:30pm.

The aim is to meet the Year 5 team, find out about what Year 5 have in store this year and to see their classroom.

If you have any questions, please contact Mr Arthur: deputy@sprowstonjunior.norfolk.sch.uk

Star of the Day!

Every day staff will be sending home a 'Star of the Day' badge on Marvellous Me to children who have been, a 'star!'

Each badge will be designed by a pupil and will show off some of the amazing artistic talent we have here at Sprowston Junior.

The inaugural badge has been designed by Jacob in Salhouse. Keep an eye out for this wonderful 'Star of the Day' badge appearing in Marvellous Me near you.

We will be running competitions throughout the year so that more children have the chance to share their designs, so watch this space!

Speak to your child's class teacher if you haven't signed up to Marvellous Me yet.
