Summer 2024

Welcome to the Summer term Year 3!

Welcome back Year 3. We have an exciting and action-packed summer term of activities and learning planned. Here's a little taster of what's in store this term...

Curriculum Overview

Summer

Literacy: Firstly, we will be continuing our work on fairy tales, writing our very own exciting tales. Then we look at poetry with 'A nest full of stars' - we get to explore figurative language, poetry structures and make links to our geography topic. We finish off with 'The secrets of Black Rock' and Gregory Cool. We will discuss the countries that are visited in the texts and learn about their cultures. We will look at different writing styles and get the chance to create our own poems and write in the style of the authors.

Maths: In maths this term we start with addition, subtraction, multiplication and division recap, before visiting fractions again. We then look at time and how to use an analogue clock. Properties of shape is next, where we look at different angles and the properties of 2D and 3D shapes. We finish off with statistics- interpretting and drawing graphs.

Science: We start the Summer term off by concluding our light and shadow topic. We will be conducting lots of mini experiments to find out how shadows are made and changed. Next, we will be exploring forces with magnets, comparing how things move on different surfaces. We will get to observe how magnets attract or repel each other and attract some materials and not others. Then, we look at plants and living things by investigating parts of a plant and their uses. The summer term science comes to a close with coastal habitats where we ask the question: What habitats are found at the coast? We will be able to answer this question when we visit West Runton in July.

Science spelled out with DNA, a magnet, a test tube, a shell, nitrogen, the crescent moon, and leaves

History: In history we will continue our work on Ancient Egypt.  We discuss the significance of the River Nile and the Pyramids. We also get to find out more about mummification and how hieroglyphics were used. We even get to spend the day as an Egyptian when we go back in time on our Egyptian Day (details to follow).

Geography: We will be looking at ‘Cool coasts’. We will be exploring coastal features and how to use the coast by asking the key questions: What is a coast? How is a coast used? We will take a closer look for ourselves when we visit West Runton later in the term (details to follow).

RWE: In RWE we discover more about Hinduism by investigating the key questions: How can Brahman be everywhere and in everything? Would visiting the Ganges feel special to a non-Hindu?

Who Is Lord Brahma, the God of Creation in Hinduism

We will be doing lots of other fun and exciting things too, which we are sure your child will tell you all about.

Reminders:

Home/School Journal: As before -children will earn house points for reading at home. Every Friday we expect the journal to come in to school signed by someone at home (with a comment if possible).

Year 3's PE days are Monday and Friday. Please send children to school in their PE kits (blue/black shorts, navy or white tops). Earrings should not be worn on these days (please can we make a huge effort to take these out at home) and hair should be tied back.
