Friday 15th March, 2024

We thoroughly enjoyed Book Week last week and loved the dressing up and the competition entries. The week is an enjoyable part of the school calendar. It was lovely to see many parents & carers in school reading with their children. This will return again next book week, but we'd like to encourage this even more and will be inviting you in at other times over the school year to read with your child in school.

I enjoyed watching the You tube video of the F1 in schools finals and seeing our wonderful Year 5 children representing the school fantastically. I hope all the children who went to the 'Magna Science Adventure Centre' in Rotherham this week had a brilliant day and learnt a great deal about all aspects of running an F1 team. See below for more information about the day.

Well done to all the children who auditioned for Sprowston's Got Talent. It is a shame we cannot put more through to the final but we appreciate all the children's efforts and hope they all enjoyed being part of it.

This is a very short half-term and I, for one, am panicking about all I need to fit in before Easter arrives! The children are completing assessments over the next few weeks as we assess their learning since Christmas and look ahead to the learning opportunities in the summer term, with lots to look forward to.

Wishing everyone a good weekend.

Kind regards

Matt Walton, Headteacher

Sprowston Junior at the F1 in Schools National Finals at the Magna Science Adventure Centre (Thursday 12th March 2024)

Four teams of children from Year 5 (Bolt Action, Cyber Falcons, Dream Big and Electric Speed) took part in the F1 in Schools Regional Finals at Sprowston Community Academy in February knowing that there were places at the National Finals up for grabs. F1 in Schools is a STEM and Design & Technology competition, engaging students aged 9-11 through a truly cross-curricular activity. Teams aim to compete at a Primary Class Regional Final, with the hope of progressing on to a National Final.

After a day of hotly contested Regionals competition two teams from Sprowston Junior were selected to go through to the National Finals. Cyber Falcons (Liv, Eliza, Horace and Kacper) won the Regional Finals and Bolt Action (Amber, Gioia, Xheison and Sonny) finished in third place.

So, on Tuesday 12th March, children from Sprowston Junior School travelled to the Magna Science Adventure Centre, Rotherham for the F1 in Schools National Finals. While only two teams had qualified for the finals, members from the other two teams were keen to travel to support their friends, so all four teams headed up to Rotherham.

The early departure time from school (5am!) didn’t dampen any of the enthusiasm and before they knew it, they had arrived at the Magna Science Adventure Centre. After registering and setting up their pit displays the children got the chance to explore. Highlights included the long race track, the Williams F1 racing car and of course talking to all the other competitors.

The day was split in to four different categories: talking to the judges about their pit display (a display of all the work they have been doing), being asked questions about their design portfolio (the portfolio outlined the rationale behind their design – including testing and car design), giving a verbal presentation (introducing the team and talking about their experiences of the F1 in Schools project) and of course racing their cars. The children got the chance to share all the hard work they have been putting into the project since they started in January. Here’s what they thought of the experience:

“I really enjoyed looking at the other team pit displays.” Teddy

“I loved building the car and creating the pit display” Bertie

“I thought F1 in Schools was a little thing, but it turned in to whole day out to Rotherham where there were teams from across the UK and even Hong Kong!” Ethan

“I really enjoyed working as a team and seeing the smiles on the teams’ faces.” Millie

“I really loved F1 in Schools. I liked to when we performed in front of the judges, it was a really enjoyable experience.” Liv

“Being interviewed live on TV was very cool and I really enjoyed racing our car.” Sonny

“My favourite part of the day was our presentation.” Amber

“I liked F1 because we worked really hard together as a team.” Xheison

“F1 was a really fun experience. We learnt lots of interesting facts going to regionals and nationals.” Gioia

If that wasn’t enough excitement for one day, all the children even got the chance to visit the Magna Science Adventure Centre and find out more about the wonders of Science and Technology in their four pavilions (Air, Earth, Fire and Water). It was amazing!

Everyone has really enjoyed being part of the competition and had an incredible time at the National Finals. We’re already making plans for next year!

Thanks to Mrs Bryant, Nova Racing and Real Velocidad from Sprowston Community Academy for all their help with preparations for the Regional and National finals; and to Tom, Aimee and everyone from F1 in Schools for all their hard work in organising the competition.

A special thank you to all the parents/carers who got up extra early to get their children to school for a 5am departure.

An extra special mention to Mr Dera (aka Kacper's dad) and his company Kwik Pix for providing all the children from Bolt Action and Cyber Falcons with T-Shirts, caps and bags for the day. They looked great in their new merch!

The auditions!

The hottest talent was on show this week as the auditions took place for our end of term 'Sprowston's Got Talent' Grand Final. Acts from across the school were competing to make it through to the final which will be held on Tuesday 26th March.

All the acts were amazing and the Year 6 House Captains (aka our very own Simon Cowells!) had a tough job narrowing the final selection down to just one act per class. So, after much deliberation, they came to a decision of who would be performing to a packed school hall in a couple of weeks. In fact, the decision was so tough that they decided to add an extra spot for "the Judges' Choice".

Here's a list of all the acts that got through to the Grand Final:

Martham: Kayla

Filby: Elicia and Imogen

Ranworth: Grace & Florence and 'Beat to the Box'

Wroxham: Macy

Salhouse: Sonny

Hickling: The Monkeys

Lily: The Cheer Group

Judge's Choice: Talia & Amy

Well done to everyone who took part in the auditions. It was brilliant to see just how much talent we have at school.

Year 5 at Sutton Hoo

Not content with one trip, Year 5 managed to squeeze in two trips in just two days this week!

On Wednesday the year group headed off to Sutton Hoo to find out more about their history topic - the Anglo Saxons. During the day they got to visit the ancient burial mound, go up the new viewing tower, visit the amazing visitor attraction and hunt for runes in the forest.

Everyone had a great time and learnt lots about the significance of Sutton Hoo, the life of King Raedwald (the first king of East Anglia), the painstaking efforts in 1939 to unearth such wonderful treasures and how this site has helped shaped the part of the country we live in today.

As Year 5 were leaving Sutton Hoo the National Trust guide was keen to pass on just how brilliantly everyone thought the children had behaved. They were commended on some fabulous knowledge and some thought-provoking questions. Well done Year 5!

Thanks to Mrs Harrison for organising the trip and to the parents who joined them for the day.

NSPCC Speak out Stay safe

The NSPCC visited school last week to deliver sessions from their safeguarding programme Speak out Stay safe to the children in Year 5 and 6.

Speak out Stay safe is a safeguarding programme for children aged 5- to 11-years-old. It is available to all primary schools in the UK and Channel Islands. It helps children understand:

  • abuse in all its forms and how to recognise the signs of abuse
  • that abuse is never a child’s fault and they have the right to be safe
  • where to get help and the sources of help available to them, including their Childline service (source: nspcc.org.uk)

During the sessions, the children were involved in discussions about different forms of abuse and the impact they have on people. The children learnt where people can go for help.

For more information on the NSPCC Speak out Stay safe click here.

If your child needs help they can call the NSPCC Childline number: 0800 1111

There is also useful information in the Safeguarding information for parents section on the school website.
