Friday 1st March, 2024

We celebrate a number of successes in today's newsletter and congratulate all the children involved in both the F1 and the girls' football. In both events, the children represented the school very well and worked hard to achieve their successes.

We have Book Week next week, and as well as the dressing up and challenges, we'd also like to invite you, if time allows, to spend some time in school with your child. The library will be open to all from 8:45am to 9:10am. Please do stay and spend some time with your child if you are able to at any point.

I'd like to say well done to the school council for raising an impressive amount from their bake sale. Thank you once again for supporting it so well. The support for all fund-raising efforts is always excellent and we really appreciate it. I'm sure they'll enjoy spending the money!

It's that time of year again, when we ask the children to showcase their talents for Sprowston's Got Talent. The children love the event, and we look forward to seeing their amazing efforts!

We look forward to seeing many of you at parents' evening next week. Booking closes today. We still welcome bookings after today,  please get in contact with the school office and they will help you.

Have a lovely weekend.

Kind regards

Matt Walton, Headteacher

F1 in Schools Primary Class Starter Pack

F1 in Schools - Regional Finals (Thu 15th Feb)

This term Year 5 have been completing the F1 in Schools STEM project. This has involved researching topics such as aerodynamics, wind resistance and friction. They have used what they have learnt to help them build a model paper racing car.

As part of the project, four teams were selected to represent school at the Regional Finals at Sprowston Community Academy on Thu 15th Feb. At the event, they were involved in sharing a design portfolio, putting on a presentation to judges about their team, displaying the work that they have produced and racing their cars along a race track. They got to see teams form the entry, development and pro classes compete. The children met up and support teams from Sprowston Community Academy, Nova Racing and Real Velocidad. Congratulations to Real Velocidad who won the pro class.

Everyone who took part did amazingly well and had a great time.

From this event, two teams from school qualified for the National Finals at the Magna Science Adventure Centre, Rotherham on Tue 12th Mar. They will be travelling to Rotherham to complete against teams from all over the UK.

Well done to all the children who represented school at the Regional Finals and a special congratulations to Bolt Action who finished Third overall on the day and won Best Engineered Car, and to Cyber Falcons who were Regional Champions!

The teams who went to Regional Finals were:

Bolt Action: Amber, Gioia, Sonny, Xheison

Cyber Falcons: Liv, Eliza, Kacper, Horace

Dream Big: Ethan, Penny, Lois, Teddy, Aaron

Electric Speed: Jasper, Bertie, Freddie, Millie, Isla

School Council Valentine's Day Bake Sale

A huge thank you to everyone who brought in bakes for the School Council's Valentine's Day Bake Sale just before the half-term holiday. We were blown away by everyone's generosity in both providing bakes, but also supporting the School Council and buying bakes from them at break time and after school.

Thanks to your generous donations, the School Council raised an amazing £206.65! The School Council will be using this money to buy equipment for the playground.

Here's what some of our School Council thought:

"Everyone was so generous at bringing in cakes and bakes - thank you" Gioia.

"I really enjoyed selling the cakes at breaktime. It was good to see so many people waiting to buy our cakes", Sonny.

"I was great fun to organise. Everyone has been so kind" Max

"I can't believe how many cakes everyone brought in. Thank you for being so generous", Freya.

Website Thank You

Cross country - Fri 1st Mar (Horsford Primary)

Today our cross country runners took part in the penultimate race of the season - the rescheduled race at Horsford Primary. Whilst it is pretty flat, it is always a tricky course to navigate but as you'd expect our runners took it (literally) in their stride.

Well done to everyone who competed today: Eliza, Carissa, Jasper, Ethan, Sam, Xheison, Talia, Phoebe, Ani, Dexter, Lewis, Ethan

Next week is the final event of the season. After that, we turn our attention to track and field with the City Sports, so watch this space.

Sprowston's Got Talent!

It's that time of year again. The time when we see all the hidden talents of our amazing pupils. Our House Captains will be holding auditions on Thursday 14th March to see which acts will be chosen to represent their classes at this year's Sprowston's Got Talent Finals on Tuesday 26th March?

Thank you to everyone who has already signed up to Marvellous Me. We currently have 160 parents & carers who have downloaded the app and are making the most of being able to find out what their children have been up, receive 'thumbs ups' and other notifications as well as receiving messages from classes.

Here are links to a parent walk through guide and a 'parent app explained' video with some useful information about how to get started.

If you have any questions, or need some help, please let a member of the year group team know. You can also email Mr Arthur (deputy@sprowstonjunior.norfolk.sch.uk) who will be able to get you up and running.

Girls' Football Success!

The week before half term saw the girls' football team visiting Horsford for a cup quarter final. The girls took control of the match from the first whistle and played really well as a team. They got themselves into a 4-0 lead before Horsford scored. We added two further goals, with Horsford scoring one more to make the final score 6-2 to Sprowston. The goal scorers were: Eliza (3), Freya (2) & Phoebe. Well done to Freya, Bella, Phoebe, Yin-Hei, Eliza, Penny, Lexi H and Ani.

We look forward to the semi-finals!

Book Week

We are looking forward to Book Week, next week, and we hope everyone has seen the letter emailed home. Dressing up is on Thursday 7th March. If you are struggling for a costume, please ask your child's class teacher or at the office as we may be able to help and have some costumes in school.

Please also take note of the different challenges in the letter too. We've seen some good work towards some of the challenges already!

Also - if you'd like to stay and read with your child next week, please do so! Simply ask your child to go to class and get registered, and they will be able to meet you in the school library. This opportunity will be open to you any day next week from 8:45am - 9:10am.

British Science Week - March 8th

To celebrate British Science week, all the children are going to be set a challenge to measure a minute of time in a creative way. The best ideas will be displayed in a special science assembly later in March.

Mr Reeds and the Science Ambassadors/Club will also be putting on a science fair for children to visit on March 21st. During the afternoon, Year 3 will get to visit the fair with children and adults welcome to visit and see the displays after school at 3:15pm.

Friends of SJS

Please remember the Friends of SJS 'Mother's Day' shop is next Tuesday morning. The children will need cash to visit the shop. Please see the letter sent home. Also, please note that the Friends are holding their Easter disco on Tuesday 26th March at 6:30pm.

School Governors

The governing body are seeking a new parent governor to join the school governing board. If you'd like to support the school further and feel like you'd like to contribute towards the good work that the school governors do, please get in contact with Mr Walton in the first instance for an informal chat about the role. We appreciate the time pressures on everyone in today's society, but being a governor may not take up as much time as you think.

If we have a number of parents deciding to put themselves forward, we would need to hold an election. All initial enquiries need to be made by March 15th.

Working on Worries

We are excited to be taking part in a new initiative to help families manage anxiety and worry. Working on Worries is a project which provides training for school staff so that they work alongside parents/carers to help young people.

Childhood anxiety disorders are common and have a negative impact on educational, social and health outcomes. There are evidence-based treatments for childhood anxiety disorders, but most families are currently unable to access them. Parent-led Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) for child anxiety is a brief intervention with a strong evidence base that can be successfully delivered by novice therapists without specialised training. (source: arc-eoe.nihr.ac.uk)

Mrs Magee, Mrs Webb, Mrs Collier and Miss Clark have all had training to enable them to support parents/carers. If you would like more information about Working on Worries, please contact Miss Clark: senco@sprowstonjunior.norfolk.sch.uk
