Welcome back!

We hope you had an enjoyable and festive Christmas break and are looking forward to a new term in Year 5. We hope you are all refreshed and ready for the term ahead. Thanks again for all your support last term, all the children were fantastic with their attitude towards their learning. We have lots of exciting things planned for the upcoming year, including some exciting trips and visits.

PicturePE

Wroxham PE - Tuesdays and Thursdays

Salhouse PE - Tuesdays

Swimming

This term, Salhouse will be swimming on Thursdays. Please see the separate swimming letter for more information.

PE kit reminder

A reminder that our uniform policy for PE kit is a plain white or navy t-shirt and navy or black shorts/jogging bottoms. School jumpers can be worn. We are also suggesting that children who wear earrings do not wear them on PE days. Also, those with long hair must tie their hair back and earrings must either be taken out or covered with tape.

Our Spring Curriculum

Literacy - The children have really enjoyed learning all about Ernest Shackleton and his journey on Endurance to Antarctica. The children produced some fantastically detailed newspaper reports, finally ending with our wonderful Reading Cafe, thank you again to everyone who came.  This term we will be reading and writing some super suspense stories based on the text, 'Skellig'.

Maths - We will continue with our work on fractions. Fractions can be an area which causes confusion with children, however we will continue to use lots of visual and physical resources to help us learn. After this, we will be focusing on formal written methods for multiplication and division.

Science - We will continue to explore materials and their properties, and look at how materials can change state. We will then begin our Space topic - this is always a favourite!!

History - We begin our studies on The Anglo-Saxons and Vikings before moving on in history to The Normans. The children are going to love the gruesome content!

R.W.E - We are turning our focus back to Islam during the first Spring half-term, looking at Muslim's beliefs on Akhirah - life after death.

DT - We have a very exciting brand-new topic to introduce to you. Children will be designing and making their very own F1 racing car.

Art - After our DT project, we will return to Art and be exploring the Bayeux Tapestry and creating our very own versions.

Computing - We will be delving into the world of computer systems and networks. Lots of technical vocabulary and skills will be learnt during this unit.

Music - Our two units during the Spring term are titled 'Solar Systems' and 'Life Cycles'. During these units, children will get to perform a song with expression with attention to tone and phrasing, as well as learn about the sound of the whole tone scale.

French - Mrs Blazer will teach the children about French foods and towns.

More information on our curriculum can be found on the school website.

Trip to Sutton Hoo

As part of our history unit this term we will be visiting Sutton Hoo. We will be investigating the Royal Burial Ground - home to one of the greatest archaeological discoveries of all time, looking round the High Hall exhibition - featuring replica and original objects discovered at Sutton Hoo and spending time exploring the woodland - with a range of walking routes and views across the River Deben, towards Woodbridge.

A letter will be going home with more information about the trip. If you have any questions, please speak to a member of the Year 5 team.

F1 in schools project

This term we will be taking part in F1 in schools, a fully-resourced STEM and Design & Technology competition aimed at engaging students aged 9-11 through a truly cross-curricular project.

In the past, only a few children have had the chance to take part in this exciting project. This year, however, we have decided to run it as a whole-year group project so that everyone will have the chance to learn more about what is involved with designing, building and racing a compressed gas-powered model car.

Teams from Year 5 will be chosen to represent Sprowston Junior and compete in a Primary Class Regional Final with the hope of progressing on to a National Final.

To find out more about the F1 in schools project, take a look at this video.

As part of the project, the children have to organise some fundraising events - watch this space for more information!

Homework & Spelling Tasks | Blakedown Primary School

We will continue to set one piece of homework each week, alternating between maths (set on MyMaths) and a literacy/ history piece of work. Homework will continue to be set on a Thursday and is expected to be completed by the following Wednesday. We have been pleased with the number of children completing homework so far this year, and would ask you all to continue to encourage your children to read daily and practice their spellings.

Finally...

We are really looking forward to the upcoming term - we know the children will continue to be superstars and show amazing attitudes towards their learning!

As always, we are readily available to chat and discuss any concerns you may have with anything.

Kind regards,

The year 5 team
