Friday 10th November, 2023

The teachers have enjoyed meeting many parents & carers this week for parents' evening and I hope you found it useful to hear about how your child is getting on and to see their books. If you weren't able to make parents' evening and would like to see your child's class teacher, please get in contact and we will sort out a convenient time for a meeting.

Some of the Year 4 children have enjoyed taking part in Bikeability today. It really is a great scheme and very worthwhile in helping children become road safe on their bikes. They will be able to move onto the Year 5/6 course next year - this is a very thorough process over the course of 4 days and helps them to build their confidence as well as their skills as they move onto the road. Next week is 'National Road Safety Week' and as we move to the dark nights we will be talking about staying safe whilst walking or biking in the community.

Next week is also Anti-Bullying week as well as Children In Need! Anti-Bullying week starts with an odd-socks day on Monday. The theme for Anti-Bullying week is 'Make A Noise About Bullying'.  You'll find more information below.

Next Friday is 'Children In Need'. Hopefully you received the email about the different things we are doing to raise money for charity. If you didn't, the content of the email is below in the newsletter. The day is a 'non-uniform' day with all contributions voluntary.

We've had a couple of curriculum visits this week, and it has been wonderful to hear about the behaviour of both Year 3 and Year 5 at the Cathedral and the Mosque. Well done to all!

Have a lovely weekend.

Kind regards

Matt Walton, Headteacher

Year 4 Greek Day

Last Tuesday was Greek Day and we dressed up and did a lot of amazing things. We had a great time together.

Firstly, I made some medicine to cure my servant so I mixed up cinnamon and poppy seeds using a pestle and mortar.

Next, I dashed to the pottery where we made cool looking pots with cool patterns. I carefully made mine into a large Greek pot.

After that, we participated in a Greek Olympic move-a-mile and I ran a mile. Then we went in the hall and did some rowing, chariot-racing and shot put.

In the afternoon, we created a play. We got into groups and practised our play. The plays were themed on Greek myths.

At the end, we had a big feast. We had a pita bread, cheese, grapes and olives. I even tried an olive and I liked it!

We finished Greek Day and said thank you to Mrs Pearce and all the adults for a nice day.

Children In Need - Friday 17th November

We will be recognising the Children In Need appeal once again this year.

The day will be a non-uniform day with a £1 voluntary donation to the charity - paid in cash on the day.

We will also be doing a number of other things over the day to help raise further funds:

- The Year 6 house captains will be running some stalls/games at lunchtime - the children will need a few 10ps, 20ps and 50ps for the activities.

- We will be encouraging children to get baking for Children In Need and selling biscuits and cakes at break-time and after-school (if we have any remaining). Please ensure any biscuits and cakes do not have any nuts in the ingredients.

- We have registered for 'Run Pudsey' - if you would like your child to take part you need to go to the link below and use the code to register your child for the event. Your child will then be given their own 'sponsor page' (individual web-link) and if they raise any amount from £1 upwards, they will receive a 'Run Pudsey' medal - these will be delivered to school. Your child gets sponsored by anyone going to their 'sponsor page' using the link created, and paying for a donation. The children will be running/walking/skipping around the playground and asked to complete at least 1 mile. They will be able to do more if they'd like to. If your child is taking part in the cross-country that day, that will count towards their 1-mile run.

Uniform Shop

Every Friday, we are opening our uniform shop - anyone is welcome to come in and take items of second hand uniform. You are most welcome to come along at any time on Friday morning. All items are free.

We appreciate any donations of uniform. Thank you to everyone for your help.

Year 3 visit to Norwich Cathedral

On Monday, Year 3 visited Norwich Cathedral to find out more about this amazing building in our city!

The Cathedral is 900 years old and took 50 years to build!

Whilst we were there, we took part in a number of activities such as learning all about christenings, making stained-glass windows like the wonderful windows in the Cathedral, and sitting where the choir sits during services.

Some of us got to dress up as a Priest and to eat what Jesus ate during 'The Last Supper, which was bread and wine (it wasn't really bread and wine!).

The Cathedral also lit a candle for the school in its peace globe!

We had a great first trip at junior school!

Year 5 visit to the Central Mosque

On Wednesday this week, Year 5 visited the Norwich Central mosque on Dereham Road. It was the perfect opportunity to find out more about Islam - something Year 5 have been studying this term.

After taking off their shoes, Year 5 assembled in the main prayer room and were welcomed by the mosque Imam. He explained a bit more about how Muslims use the mosque and why it is such a special place of worship. The members of the mosque then demonstrated the call to prayer and how they would prey. Year 5 had the chance to see some of the wonderfully decorated prayer mats and look at a copy of the Quran.

Before Year 5 left, the members of the mosque had provided snacks and drinks for everyone to celebrate their visit.

"It was fun. We got to see upstairs in the mosque and they were singing when they were praying." (Asheen)

"I really enjoyed seeing different things. It was good to see people worshipping in different ways and hearing people praying in a different language." (Gioia)

"I found it interesting how they translated the Quran into different languages." (Sonny)

"I liked seeing the Quran in Arabic and meeting the members of the mosque." (Ruby

"We all liked singing on the bus." (Asheen, Gioia, Sonny and Ruby)

Thank you to the Norwich Central Mosque for such a warm welcome this week.

Back by popular demand - the school shop returns

Lots of children have been asking about when it was going to come back and last week saw the return of the school shop for this year. This year's shopkeepers are Mollie, Indigo and Lexi. They will be opening every Friday from 12:30pm - 1:00pm and will be selling a variety of stationery items. With Christmas around the corner, they might even have some festive favourites, so watch this space!

Norwich Foodbank Christmas Collection

A huge thank you to everyone who has kindly brought in donations for the Norwich Foodbank Christmas Collection Appeal. You have been so generous. Mrs Leyer has had to increase the size of the display to accommodate all the donations!

We are still collecting donations, so if you are able to contribute that would be great. Our Pupil Ambassadors will be delivering the donations to the Norwich Foodbank at the end of the month.

Thanks again for your wonderful support.

Year 4 Bikeabilty

Today some intrepid Year 4s braved the cold to take part in the first stage of Bikeability. They spent time talking about how to stay safe on their bikes, learning how to look after their bikes and then had the chance to learn some new bike skills.

All the Year 4 children will get the opportunity to take part in stage 2 of Bikeability when they are in Year 5 & 6.

Girls' Football Dray Cup

Last week, our girls' football team entered the Dray Cup, which was held at Easton College. The team had 3 games in the first stage of the competition, with the winners progressing to the semi-finals. Amazingly, all 4 games ended 0-0 against White Woman Lane, Colman, Queens Hill and Falcon.

In the last game, we needed a win to take us through to the semi-final and we came so, so, close. Phoebe came the closest with a shot that smashed the cross bar! Well done to Bella for keeping 4 clean sheets and to Freya, Phoebe, Ani, Yin-Hei, Eliza, Lexi, Jessica and Caitlyn for excellent team work.

On Tuesday they have a cup game away at St Michael's. We wish them all the best of luck and look forward to hearing how they have got on.

Anti-Bullying Week 2023: Make a noise about bullying

This year it has the theme 'Make A Noise About Bullying' and will take place from Monday 13th to Friday 17th November. The week will be kicked off with Odd Socks Day on Monday 13th November, where adults and children wear odd socks to celebrate what makes us all unique. We hope to see plenty of socks in school on Monday!

We joined 80% of schools across the UK who took part in Anti-bullying week last year, reaching over 7.5 million children and young people – Anti-Bullying Week is about reminding everyone whether it’s in school, at home, in the community or online, we can bring an end to bullying.
